I am preparing a plug of a fuse for molding and in the final stages of preparation I am trying to ge the best finish I can on the plug. I have primed with grey primer, sanded, primed, sanded, again and again. I had finished sanding with 320 wet and dry and hit it with a heavy coat of paint, ... lots of fisheyes, re sanded, hit with several light coats, no fish eyes, sanded with 600 grit wet and dry, hit with a light coat of KlassKote, let dry to a tack then hit it with a heavy coat of klasskote, more fisheyes.

I am using red with gloss catalyst, mixed, let sit for 45 minutes then thinned 50% with klasskote reducer. I am using an aibrush for painting, air is dried to -20C (at least thats how cold my garage was when I got the air tank filled). Air pressure 30PSI.

What can be done to reduce the fisheye, I know I can sand and finish with 1200 - 2,000 then polish but I wanted the wet look when I am done spraying.

Any recommendations?

Kevin M.

fish eyes are from contamination, oil and water being the two most likely, are you using a separator on your air supply??

Sounds like you are gathering a lot of weight there. Best remove to past the original fisheyes, or they just may come back regardless. Gotta have a seperator in the system, before or after the regulator or at the gun, but something to keep the junk out. Love the Klasskote, one of the few paints I don't screw up regularly, very user friendly even with my 40 year old Jacussi sic compressor. Try Lowes tool center, have several decent reasonable cost dryer/seperators. ENJOY

Are you cleaning the part immediately prior to painting? Just before I paint I wipe the part with a soft cloth and an automotive cleaner. The cleaner removes all grease, fingerptints, sanding residue etc, etc, and evaporates quickly leaving a dry surface free of contaminates.

It also sounds like you may be reducing too much.

I mix 1/3 color, 1/3 catalyst and wait 1/2 hour. Then 1/3 reducer just before I pour it through a paint strainer, into the gun.

I spray at 20-25 psi with great results.

Good advise from all, I will include a separator in the air supply, wipe down just prior to spraying, strain and adjust the amount of reducer.

Thanks, Kevin M

One more step to surface prep is to go over the entire plug with a tack cloth. The tack cloth should be the final step, just prior to painting. Back when I used to paint with K&B (essentially Klass Kote) I learned this lesson the hard way, and the tack cloth cured the problem.

Hi
It took me a long time to paint with K&B paint. As for Klass Coat it will spray the same. The first thing is to spray a dust cost, I really mean a dry cost of paint and let tack for 15 to 20 min. Why I say this you need the surface to stick the paint too. If you put on to much paint the first time it will allways fisheye on you. Then put on the next coat and let tack off 5 min this time Then 1 more coat if needed. Or go back with just thinner in the gun to wet out the paint and get a realy glossly finsh

i have just about seen enough to convince me to use klasskote for painting my next project. some of the deep, glossy finishes i've seen are superb. i need to go to the website and start reading i suppose.
