bob, whats your opinion of the 60lx on the h-9 sundowner 50? thanks,russ

Might be fun....

trick is figuring out the muffler installation. As you know, the muffler is 40% of the total performance.

I have communicated with a few people, and I thinkkkkkkkkkkkkk you can run the tail end muffler INSIDE of the fuselage a bit (look at the electric cooling holes)

russm -> RE: 60lx (2/21/2008 9:19:37 PM)

how do muffler extensions effect performance. in a unrealated question,is 10% synth. fuel ok with the 90lx?

RANIERY -> RE: 60lx (2/21/2008 10:55:25 PM)

wich motor would be faster 60 lx or 90lx asuming you can use the mufflers.

Muffler extentions create a longer tuning length and drop the target rpm. On the 60LX, you can get away with a 1/4" or so without noticing much. Its a trade anyway... rpm drops, but torque goes up.... so a 10x6 or 10x7 is not a problem. Pushing 3/8 is probably practicle. You would not want to run, say, a 3/4" extension though...... just not going to work well.

10% fuel is fine. Synth fuel is ok. But we recommend using a castor blend fuel (synth/castor mix) for break-in, and at least until you are familiar with how the engine runs and the proper mixture settings.

I would imagine the 90LX would make it really haul. It does wonders on Cermark's Alley Cat :) But it was an easier installation on that bird - inverted engine, and used the Toni muffler extention kit.

A few folks have been flying this plane with a lot of engine up front.... and so far I have not seen panic reports of it self destructing. So it appears to be beefy enough to handle the power.

And for others reading..... if you have any reservations about cutting a hole or two in the cowl or doing at least some modifications to the Sundowner to install the jett engine ...... you might want to consider a 4c. You WILL have to do both to install any of the jett engines.

Bob:

Suppose I want to use a 'real' tuned pipe, running it outside, along the fuse under the wing. Is there a header available?

Richard

Certainly... A full size pipe is always an option.

Dub has a few standard headers available for all of the side exhaust engine. But they are pretty standard sizes - nothing real long reach. MACs offers headers as well.

For reference, the muffler bolt pattern on the small block engines is the same as ST40-46-50 and the old Webra 40 engine.

Bigger 90L engines use ST 61/75/90 muffler bolt pattern.

So you can use a header designed for one of the ST engines if you choose. MAC lists headers for the the Jett SJ-46/50 and the SJ-76/90 along with those part numbers.

Pipe setup/tune proceedure is on the jett website. Works quite well.
