dave

I think I do remember the green one, definitely recognize the guys in the background down the flight line with their "vintage" planes and suspenders that they bring every year

went to the prop shop today and drooled over some of John's planes hanging from the ceiling, bought a BNF sukhoi instead, the prop shop calls the mini penetrator the WEE-51,

you've got some slick frames in the pics, I've caught the speed bug, we need to hook up

thx

I know this is an old thread, but has anyone been in contact with JMGlassCraft lately? I really want one of these peewee penetrators for my VA mk1 but I'm too shy to call him.

Ok I called but no answer! I dont wanna bug him too much.

So anyone still flying these? what about those of you that put VA's into peewee penetrators? thats my plan, or is there any other kits he makes that would be good for 049-061? ive got norvels and a profi too....

Well out of the blue I see this thread. I had not seen any one who had one of the PeeWee Reno Mustangs. I have two of them. Both are setup for slope flying. I have been thinking about redoing them to update with modern micro gear. One has 200 to 300 flights on it. It has spent many hours over the cliff at Torey Pines. OOOHHHH what fun they were. People could not believe that something that small could go that fast!!!

Buzz.

I put my first and so far only flight on my VA powered PeeWee Penetrator at SMALL the year before last... Somehow, the needle got bent before we left and I couldn't get a consistent setting on a bladder and it flamed out on takeoff at a pretty safe altitude. It was really moving out and I put the nose down to keep airspeed but made a bad decision about a go around and stalled it at the edge of the field. It hit a fence and tore the side of the fuselage (Ironically, I hit the same fence with my .010 Yellowjacket and did the same thing the next day but someone had a bottle of CA to borrow) but I didn't have a way to repair it and haven't gotten around to it since. The damage is minor, I just need to get on the stick.

I do have one with a G-Mark .03, took it out for the first flying session and haven't pulled it out since. For the flying I like to do, a TD .010 would have been better but I wanted throttle and muffler-it was a mistake, the G-Mark is a bit of a pooch. I think the Yellow Jacket is quite a bit faster...

Hmmmm, so maybe a TD .020 is a better plan?

That piped VA penetrator looks totally killer though.

No, a straight needle and/or an unpressurized balloon would be a better choice. It went straight on launch and climbed with authority until the engine quit, it went in because I made a bad choice for another go around.

I talked to him! youre right, what a nice guy, I could talk to him for hours I'm sure. Ordered a peewee penetrator.

What about the bigger one, the cheap thrills? probably a nice plane for a profi 061 at the 36 inch span?

I don't know that I would chance a profi on a cheap thrills.... it was intended for TD .049 power back in the 80's. Structurally it will take a hell of a lot more but the airframe has problems with lots of thrust at low airspeed because of the thrust line being above the wing. Sort of like a trainer needing downthrust, but opposite. With a throttled engine it's not a problem because you can take off and throttle up to full power from 75% or so once some air is going over the tail.

I have 3 Cheap Thrills at the moment. The one I fly the most is powered by a Norvel .074, tons of power and it's near vertical (it's heavy too). That one has occasional problems on takeoff because it's swinging a pretty big prop and the thrust is very high. Once it's 30 feet out there are no issues. The next one has a 700 watt F5D motor in it and the darn thing is downright scary to juicy the throttle at anything under 40mph-this is an airplane that flutters at about 140mph when I hold the throttle open for more than 3 or 4 seconds from 80mph. I wish I built it for that kind of speed... The last one is powered by an 05 sized brushless motor and it's great. No issues because the prop diameter is small and they are really fast.

I would stick to a Norvel with a throttle. The .074 seems like it was made for the Cheap Thrills, I'm sure it would be fine with a smaller motor but balance will be difficult-mine needed a 600mah pack right up against the tank.

As far as the flying qualities, it's a really friendly design. The airfoil is reasonably thick and the stab is large-it doesn't show any bad habits at low speed. Handing is solid, rolls are quick, elevator can be set up too sensitive without fear of snap rolls. Speaking of snaprolls, they are really fast if you use a rudder. The airplane glides very well, maybe too well for most sport pilots. make your approach longer than normal or come in only 20-30 feet high at the end of the field.

Interesting Info dave, thanks. Would you care to post some photos? maybe you have an 049-061 you could put in the picture?

All these planes look soo great. Im a little scared for the 049 peewee penetrator, John didnt even seem to understand why someone would put an 049 in there. HA! he said go for a TD .020

I wouldn't be too worried about an .049 on the peewee, just make sure you practice playing space invaders the night before the test flight and make sure you aren't hung over. I didn't see anything on the climb out to pattern altitude on mine that would suggest it might be too much for the airplane.

I flew the .074 Penetrator today, I'll try to get pics tomorrow-I'm at my Significant Other's place at the moment. IIRC, I have them in my photobucket account already but there are several hundred pics to sort thru to find them.

Dave, Graupner USA sells a way cool 3x3 cam slim prop that has a 4mm hub hole and GWS sells press on spinners that have a 4mm base. they fit 1.5mm 2mm and 2.5mm shafts and are available from radical r/c. Also the Medusa 12mm motors are back in production in both 1.5 and 2mm shafts. I have a quick wing with a Medusa 5300kv motor on 2s and im having trouble keeping the prop and spinner on over half thottle! maybe a drop of ca

John and I tried the CAM 3-3, and shockingly to us, it wasn't as fast as the carved GWS props. I suspect that the effective pitch on the reshaped GWS props is a lot higher. Prop efficiency drops off a cliff from 6" to 5" so you can imagine how bad a 3" prop sucks in the scheme of things-if you get it wrong it really shows.

I'd like to try the CAM 3-3 on a TD .020 though... I have been able to get one to fire on the prime but not reliably because there isn't enough flywheel to get it started. Maybe with one of my teeny Tatone spinners...

Here's the F5D powered Penetrator (long wing Cheap Thrills) before the covering was done.. I used pigment in the fuselage resin (saved some paint weight) and changed from his typical layup. Mine was 2 layers of 2oz cloth with Kevlar tape in between, like I used to do my Sp400 racers. It was worth about a servo's weight in the end but the fuse was/is too fragile for anything but light landings. Having TWO 3 cell 2100 packs on board doesn't help, but I wish I had used his standard layup. Those long ailerons (my idea, it was supposed to be like a fast hotliner) flutter pretty badly when it gets in the upper part if it's speed range. Understand that this is way, way beyond what any Cheap Thrills will see, with about 12 times the power that the airplane was designed for back in 1982 or so.

This is the .074 Cheap Thrills at SMALL 2011. It was so hot the red epoxy paint burned and turned black. I flew it this weekend, this airplane has some serious miles on it. It's been thru 2 servo replacements but hasn't even burned a plug yet. It's been crashed once, thumped into the ground twice (took a while to figure out that I have to be ready to throttle down a pinch at takeoff on hot days) so the weight is up a little from the initial build. It's still nearly vertical even with the weight and may be once the engine finally loosens up-I'm 1krpm shy of what other people are getting here after 2 seasons of heavy flying. The airplane has performance that would have been truly spectacular back 10-15 years ago, it still looks well powered compared to the lighter electrics people would put in it now. Vertical is a little better than an Astro 05 but top speed is down 15mph or so. That said, it's plenty fast and will still run over just about anything at a typical glow club. I want to do the usual motor hop-ups on this .074 that people do to the .061's to see how it responds-I think a 5-5 prop would be the right one for the .074 if the engine could breathe a bit better as the porting is in the right range.

Speed 400 motor on 2S LiPo or 7-8 cells, electric prop adapter with a short piece of rubber clamped or twist-wired to the prop shaft, kludge a pushbutton switch on the side or whereever = cheap small engine starter. Of course be careful of flooding, hand prop it first to make sure it is clear.

I plan to do something like that for starting my Schlosser .25cc diesel, with a loosely tightened set screw on the starter cup. It starts easily enough by hand once it has been run and is free of oil, but that first run of the season usually sees it flooded before it gets wet enough to turn over freely.
