r_stewart00 -> 86" yak engine choice (2/24/2008 1:29:48 AM)

I am going to buy the 86" Yak and I am considering using the Evolution 58GX2 instead of the DA-50.
I am a little unclear about the dimensional information given by Evolution for the 58GX2 engine, and I don't want to end up with a problem getting the engine to fit.
It appears that the DA-50 with the 1 1/4" standoffs is about the same distance from the Prop washer to the firewall as the Evolution is without any stand offs.
Does anybody have any experience with using the Evolution?

Thanks,
Randy Stewart

I have ran the evo 45 before and it is a good engine, but it is very heavy. The motor would be a awesome combo, but it will put you so nose heavy that all your gear pushed back as far it will go will not balance it. The DA 50 is what I run on my 86 and I must say it is awesome. The evo is cheaper by about $70.00 but the extra money spent will save you alot of hassle later.

I am running the Evolution 45 and although the power is the same as a DA 50, I also want to try an Evolution 58. It is a full pound heavier, but with 1420 square inches it will still fly well. You can copy my setup for mounting. The 58 and the 45 share the same setup. It would be an easy swap for me. The top stand off is 3/4" and the lower on is 1/4". I have made a relocation bracket to put the lower bolt holes on the firewall.

This plane was designed around the DA, so I say why not go with that engine, sure it's a little more but look at the power and also support from DA if needed. You can't go wrong, just my 2 cents worth.

Does anyone know where to get the 1 1/4" standoffs for 86" Yak for DA in Europe?

...Just Phone Bill at Desert Aircraft...I spoke to him on a couple of occasions then ordered the whole manifold/MTW Can setup, the 1 1/4" standoffs and a DA fuel dot...it was on the doorstep in six days...wonderfull servce from Desert Aircraft.

The MVVS 58 in the Yak either the 85" or 86" is a wonderfull combination, but you will need a 22x10x3 blade prop, ground clearance is a problem and you need to keep the engine revs within the manufactures spec, even with the 22x10x3 I have had to restrict my throttle opening to stop the engine over reving, the good thing about the combination is because you are on part throttle most of the time you are not creating a lot of noise, supprisingly quiter planes look much smoother, mine is the Pro version of the 58 and it runs withou fault, then so does my MVVS 45 as well. Don't take any notice of the Brison Pitts muffler instalation it was appaling and immediatly went in the bin, restricted the revs and sapped power. Also the LiPo's on the engine box had to be moved to the wing tube to ballance.

Evo are a Spanish manufacturer and do not make a 45, the MVVS 45 is the same weight as the DA, nearly all QQ Yak's come out tail heavy, Don't know where you get your information from, but its very misleading, My 85" QQ Yak (see above) with an MVVS 58 Pro in it has the batteries on the wing tube, so it is not "so nose heavy" as you suggest. Looking through the forum most people have had to put the batteries either in the cowl or hard up against the firewall.

I have an Evolution 58gx2 in my 86" QQ yak. It is nose heavy but has a great deal of power. I needed something more than a 50cc motor as I am flying @ 4500'. QQ recommended I use the Evolution 58gx2. I use a 24 x8 or 23 x10 Bolly or Mezlik prop with no ground clearance problems at all. Especially with the new aluminum landing gear which seems to be a bit taller. The engine does make the plane nose heavy as I put everthing as far back as I could and still had to add 3+ ounces to the tail end. But it has tremendous power and will hover at less than 1/2 throttle and pull out very strongly at my 4500' altitude.

garyhi -> RE: 86" yak engine choice (4/7/2008 10:02:58 PM)

I forgot to add there is no need for standoffs with the Evolution 58GX2. I have it flush with the firewall which reduces vibration. The mounting lugs just barely fit at the bottom of the firewall. I had to remove just a bit of the triangle stock at the very bottom in the middle of the firewall, but the size of the opening I had to cut to get the carb through the firewall was about the same size shown for both the DA and the 3W.

Hi garyhi, What exhaust system are you using with your 58gx? I,ve got a H9/Carden Yak coming and was thinking about trying a 58gx. I had a MVVS 45 previously in another plane and was very happy with the performance but it needed a cannister system to wake up the engine for good power.

thx Dave

G''day Baldeagle,

How do you find the MVVS soft mount system?

Cheers
Jason.

garyhi -> RE: 86" yak engine choice (4/15/2008 7:10:52 PM)

I am using a wrap around PITTs style muffler from Evolution. (Ordered through Horizon Hobby). It fits nicely although I had to cut some cowling out around the point where it attaches to the motor and wraps around. Also where it passes through the cowling at the bottom. But taking the cowling off and on is no big deal and is not a problem.. It is not too loud and gives plenty of power. I did have trouble initially with the muffler working its way loose, but once I used the red locktite there has been no furthur issues. Try it you will like it.

Thanks I appreciate it.
