O.k. guys, need the experts on this one. The Jato guys seem to always be sleeping, but since this is an engine question, and it's all Traxxas, I'm hoping there's nothing but love here. I did have a Rustler until it got rolled over by my neighbor, who owns the local hobby shop. In turn, he gave me a Jato. I have two Jatos now. One is a 3.3 and the other is a 2.5. The 3.3 is brand new, still breaking it in. But the problem I'm having is with the 2.5. Since I know most of you 3.3 guys are 2.5 graduates I decided no place better to ask than here. My 2.5 is (was) bone stock. And a shaker and mover at that. It ran awesome. Today I got a THS pipe for my 3.3, so I decided to put my other Traxxas Resonator Dual Chamber pipe on the 2.5. Now keep in mind this was all while I was at work so no temp gun or other tools. I have never had problems with my glow plug on my 2.5, but here's how the story went. Changed the pipe from the 2.5 from stock to the above mentioned. Put my E-Z starter to it and it would not fire. I noticed the glow plug light on the wand was not on. Changed the glow plug and tested the old one, which was shot. After installing the new plug the car fired right up. As I began running it, I noticed that there was alot of blue smoke (running rich, right?) But I continued to run it and slightly try and lean it out, but to no avail. She burned blue smoke till the tank ran out. After I refilled the tank to run it again, I noticed the glow plug light off again. Now I'm out of plugs to try. What do you think this means. Is it that the pipe being a higher performance pipe than the stock was making it run rich and foul the plug. Is that even what happens to a glow plug. Let me know what you think on this situation since I'll be stuck here at work for another 12 hours.  Thanks guys.

Oh, and keep in mind that the 2.5 was a well broken in engine, it's not brand new.

I had the same problem with my old 2.5. I didn't have any mods, but I was burning through a glow plug every time i started the engine. It was a 3 year old engine with plenty of hours on it, and it just decided to start eating plugs. Everything was in perfect tune, and there was no internal damage being done. What I discovered was the plugs were being damaged by the way I was shuting down the engine. Like most rc people, I was either pinching the fuel line, or letting it run out of gasto turn off the engine. That leans the engine out, and running lean for any amount of time is NOT GOOD. So, instead of cutting fuel to shut down, I started cutting the air. If you completely cover the opening in the air filter, there will be no oxygen which means no combustion. When done right, this won't flood your engine, and will shut down your car even faster than the normal way. Now I always do this, and, not only do I never have that problem, but my plugs last much much longer.

Especially as your car gets older, there will always be little tricks that you have to find to keep it going. That is one of the many I've learned

The trx 3.3 drops right into the rustler 2.5. Absolutley everything from engine mounts to ez start to clutch lines right up and bolts in place. The only thing you might have to do to get it to fit is you may have to cut a bigger hole in the body to clearence the larger engine head. Other than that the only thing you have to watch out for is broken parts due to going amazingly fast

This swap is one of the easiest and most reliable performance upgrades for a rustler.

I am a newbie to the board as far as posting goes so be patient with me. I picked up a Nitro Rustler new back in 2000, it had the .15 pro in it. From what I have learned in past couple months is that the Rustler I have has been renamed the Sport. I ran the car for a while and after replacing the carb and a few other parts it got shelved for last 7 years or so. My kids are now of an age where they would appreciate the car, so out it came. The engine was locked up, with a bit of degreaser it was pumping again. I had switched over to a pull start back then cause it was the “cool” thing to do, after going through about five of them, I am back to the electric start that came with it. After the cleaning of the engine, a new spur gear and some tightening of screws, the .15 was running again. After a few weeks, I was having issues with the now nearly 10 year old engine, so I decided I would swap for the 2.5. After some thought this past weekend and some reading, I figured I would try the 3.3 instead.

The old school rustler saw its first three tanks of fuel yesterday for a start at the break in process. I replaced most of what I could without breaking the bank more so then I had already in the past month of just keeping it going. I am waiting on a wheelie bar and plan to replace shocks next. I will upload some pics very soon and show where I am, as of now it seems to run pretty well in the break in process with the 3.3. I need new tires.

Here is a list of what I have upgraded, there may be some I missed but it’s the bulk of what I have done. I am including a picture of the Proline body for those who don’t know what it looks like, I was teased that I was going with the “golf cart”. I will get pics ASAP.

Sorry for the long read, but this board has been helpful and influential on what I have done in last few weeks with a ten year old car.
