I am being optomistic maybe 13-14lbs. I am planning Li-On RX pack. Hitec 5955's all around.
(should only need 1 on rudder at 333oz) Bisson muffler. Bur we will see what you come up with
for weight.

Hi again "overboard."

Well, I finished my Extra today. I didn't weigh the airframe without the engine as originally intended, but instead, I weighed the plane, completed (with Fuji BT 43 EI-2), then weighted another Fuji engine separately. Here's the scoop;

My plane is setup with all Futaba 9155 servos (less the throttle servo which is a 9202 I believe). Also, I used the pull/pull setup for the rudder, but used only one Hobbico CS-170 (instead of two lesser-torque servos). The Rx battery is a 6V, 2/3A 1400mAh NiMH battery and the ignition battery is a 2000mAh NiMH. I also have 3.5 oz. of lead in the tail to achieve the C.G. we recommend in the instruction manual--if I would have used the dual rudder servos mounted in the tail with pushrods (instead of the pull/pull servo setup up front) I would not have needed the tail weight (but I guess the plane wouldn't have weighed much less or more). And oh, yea, I temporarily had a Zinger Pro wood 20 x 10 prop mounted, but not the spinner--I will be running a Mejzlik 20 x 10 prop (carbon) and Pete's carbon spinner, so I figure the wood prop less spinner weighs about the same as the carbon prop and carbon spinner.

Anyway, I also weighed a Fuji engine at work today; the engine, ignition module, muffler, all the bolts and washers and the ignition battery pack weigh 66.2 oz (1877g). That's about 4-1/8 lbs. if my math is correct.

If you do the math, that means the plane, set up as described, less the engine weighs 10 lbs, 6 oz. (Oh, I guess I never told you my plane weighs 14.5 lbs ready-to-fly as described above).

So, however much your glow setup weighs just tack that onto the weight of my setup plus or minus any different gear you will be running. You will be able to subtract another 3.5 oz because you should not be needing any tail weight with a glow engine.

Hope this helps!

Tim

Sounds real nice! On a side note do you know when the video will be going on the site?

Hi Super.

About a week ago I asked our "video people" about that. They were working on a few other videos filmed around the same time. They said it would be about a week or ten days, which puts it at about "any day now."

I keep checking my self!

Tim

Tim,

Thanks for the info. on the AUW weights on your Extra.

Is there any way to move the rx/ignition packs back far enough to eliminate the extra 3.5oz in lead?

I look forward to seeing some pics. and getting a detailed flight report after the maiden.

Thanks again Tim!!

Regards,

Tim

Hey Tim!

Hmm, remember, the lead in the tail was required because I opted for the pull/pull with the gas engine. One option would be to use the rudder servos mounted in the tail under the stab. But if you prefer the pull/pull, you could make a mount for the Rx battery and glue it between the lower fuselage rails about as far back as you can reach--probably (and practically) about 12" to 18". I wouldn't move the ignition battery back--I have it mounted to the slanted bottom of the engine box. It's good to keep separation between any engine components and the radio gear.

Maybe when I get back to work tomorrow I'll draw up a mount and post it with dimensions so everyone could make one.

I can post some pics, but they aren't much different than the ones on the Tower and GP web site--it's another ARF! But I can post just for fun anyway.

Keep in touch!

Tim

(By the way, these things are shipping--I mean they're in stock and shipping to customers.)

Hey, you stole my thunder!

Man, was it cold that morning! Frank parked his Suburban on the flight line so we could stand next to it to block the wind. The fuel lines were frozen stiff and I was worried the clunk in the tank wouldn't work.

Yea, that's a Fuji BT-43 EI-2.

Enjoy!

Hmmm..... sorry about that Tim. I guess checking the TW website 4 times a day would account for my earlier post.

Hey, more power to ya Tim!

Just came from my "shop" (which is a 10' x 12' spare bedroom with hardly enough room to breathe, let alone work on a 1/4-scale plane!) where I was crossing the t's and dotting the i's before I get in my first flight tomorrow. The weather's supposed to be great--but first I gotta go run this 5K race my wife entered me in!

Say hello to Carol at Toledo for me. The Extra will be on display. Hope it didn't get too much hangar rash during the trip up.

Okay then,

Tim

Tim,

Goodluck on your maiden tomorrow!!

I will be spending a good portion of my day at the Show but will probably break out as well to get some flying in. I'll definately tell Carol hello for you.

Tim

Hey again Tim.

Have a good time at the show and I'm glad your plane arrived in good shape.

Say, there was supposed to be a sheet in there about tightening the covering on ARF models, but I don't think it made it. Here's a link.

http://manuals.hobbico.com/top/tighten-covering.pdf

See ya.

Hmmm..... not much to tighten the covering looks near flawless.

Soooo were you able to maiden your Extra today? Details, details we all need details.

I was able to talk to Frank Noll today about the 27% Extra (and see his on display at the GP booth). I think we have a setup planned for mine.

Hey Tim.

Yup.

Got in the maiden and about four or five more! Love that gas!!!

It took several flips to get 'er started the first time, but that was expected. Then I taxied the plane away from the pits and ran the engine up after it warmed up for a few minutes. It was running extraordinarily rich, so I turned it off and leaned it some. Did this a few times until it would run up well, but was still obviously rich.

Then ran it up and down several times to make sure the transition was good and reliable. Did a range check (using my old 9ZAP with TM-7 module and 607 FASST Rx). Everything cool (those things range check on the ground for like a mile!!!).

Winds were light and she took right to the air. A little trim here-and-there and everything was everything. First flights were with a Zinger 20 x 10 Pro wood prop and the aluminum spinner.

Power was good, but would get better as the engine loosens up and breaks-in and I lean the needle (and gas: oil ratio later).

Anyway, I really have confidence in gas engines--they just don't quit!

I ended up adding about 10% up elevator to rudder mix. That might still be a tad too much.

As I put in more flights I leaned the needle a little and now it's putting out good power, but could go leaner yet. Today I plan to lean the gas: oil ratio as well. I started out at about 32: 1 and will go to 40: 1 today.

I mounted the Pete's carbon spinner and Mejzlik prop and got a few flights with that too.

After the first flight I removed the canopy hatch to check everything under there and all was fine--no fuel tank leaks, all the radio gear secure, etc.

After I got home last night I removed the cowl to check everything "under the hood" and all okay there too--a little messy due to the rich runs, but not too bad and as expected.

Getting ready for cinimon rolls now, then back out.

Oh yea, I need LOTS of work on my IMAC Sportsman routine--LOTS of work!

Oh yea again, after some experimentation, I have my timer in my Tx set to 13 minutes. That gives me at least a few minutes extra. First flight I had it set to 15 minutes, and with the engine running so rich she was bone dry when I landed. Whew! But now, with the engine running leaner and closer to normal needle settings, I can get fifteen pretty easily. Might bump the time up to 14 mins.

Sorry about the crummy pictures. Bad lighting in my garage.
