This engine has been discontinued at Tower Hobbies. Did the O.S. Max FL-70 replace this engine and why?

The FL has been around quite a while. I believe it was an earlier version(and less expensive) 70 four-stroke from OS.

Airbusdriver,
The FL came out a couple years ago. The surpass is twice the engine and has been produced for close to twenty years. The FL is loaded with cheap cost cutting measures, and I would not even use one for a paper weight.

The Fl-70 was designed for the newcomer to 4 strokes...with easy adjustment and low maintenance in mind...it uses a ringless piston and an aribleed carb, but it's definately newer than the surpass series, don't remember exactly, but it came out no more than 5 years ago.

I have two (2) friends who use the FL 70. Both perform flawlessly.

Follow the instructions concerning tank plumbing (which is different to the usual arrangement) and there should be no difficulty.

The FL70 and Ultimate 70 did not have the success in the marketplace that the 70 Surpass I or Surpass II did.

The Ultimate 70 was a trouble maker with regulator problems in the beginning.

Many people have been critical of the FL70 and have tried to compare it with the 70 Surpass series or even the Magnum 70. The FL70 does not have the power of the others but actually doesn't give any trouble. It does very well at its intended task.

OS has just about lost me as a customer with replacing the 70 Surpass II with an engine that costs ~$140 more. It's unreasonable and has driven me more to other engine manufacturers.

I have quite a few older OS engines and I love them - the 70 is one of them. It is a true gem.

The OS 70 III sounds good as long as they don't put a very high price on it. I just don't think I can wait that long. I've been looking in the want ads for the OS 70 Surpass II with no luck. Just a couple of the engine before the 70 Surpass II with the silver valve cover. I've also looked at the Thunder Tiger F-75s 4 stroke.

Actually, as I understand, OS is hoping that people pay $250 for the not so new .56 alpha.
I read in some forum that it has almost the same power, with less weight.
It would means 50 more bucks...
