It's Been a few years since I've played with nitro planes. Recently my daughter has been begging me to work on an airplane and learn to fly RC.
I figured I'd better not let this opportunity Pass

I have Realflight G2 to get her started on the flying part, and I found my old CGM Eagle II Trainer for us to work on. Structurally it's fine but it needs an over haul.

Tower has some things.., but any recommendations on where to get some replacement parts like the windshield and windows? or other ways to fix them?
or favorite web sites for supplies?

Any tips on getting that old monokote or whatever is off??

Any help is appreciated!!

Thanks,

fly it the way it is, if it will fly, don't try to pretty it up is what i am saying as it will probably not be a permanent plane if she is just learning.. if you must pretty it up, the best way to get the old monokote off is to just sit down and prepare to spend some time peeling and cutting.. i don't know of any magic way to get it off rather than just take your time and peel it all off.. in my limited experience, i have found that you dont have to get every single little shaving off the wood so don't kill yourself trying to sand every fleck of monokote off, just get the bulk off it off and the iron will stick the new monokote on there just fine.. i don't know where to get a new windshield for it right off hand, but you can make your own, just get a piece of clear plastic large enough ( an old 2liter bottle) cut it into an area that you think will bend to the proper shape and have some area left over just to be safe and account for shrinkage, get a microwave safe dish and cover the piece of plastic with water and pop it in the microwave until the plastic is pliable (time varies by how much water the micro has to heat, probably less than 45 seconds max) get some gloves on and pull that piece out of the microwave and out of the water then quickly bend it to the proper shape either using the old windshield or the windshield frame itself.. good luck, and keep your daughter interested in planes, not boys!

As the guys have already said - don't try to make it pretty - just airworthy. A heat gun loosens the monocoat and start pealing.

What I would do, is fill in all of those windows with lite ply and cover them.
Want windows? Cover them with silver monocoat!
Front windshield? Either install a sloped a piece of Lite Ply or carve a block of Balsa to fit.

Simple and effective - get that little lady flying!

They sell clear monokote. That would look better than silver imho.

the goldberg site lists the windshield at 7.95 use clear on the side windows and it will look good as new, windows any way, for under 10.00

If the covering is torn or has holes punched in it then way not just patch it with the same color and be done with it? if its just sagging try re shrinking it. stripping and recovering is a real PITA, and for a first trainer is probably not worth it. Don't want to come off sounding negative here but the fact is that a huge percentage of first trainers die a horrible death sooner or later.

Thanks for the Tips..
As far as the existing covering, Im not sure what it is; but it's so deteriorated that it would 'shatter' when poked in some places. It also had some Stickers on it that were used to patch old holes.

it mite be less time consuming and less expensive to get one of the new arf trainers. some are very inexpensive. it might be fun also to start a new model with your daughter. I have never stripped monocoat but it sounds like a real pain

I've got about 90 % of the Covering off, I'm not gonna worry about getting every little bit. I just ordered some Red, White and Pink Econokote. Any way, My daughter is having a blast with it so I'm gonna go ahead and cover it the way she wants it. I told her that if it crashes we'll just have to rebuild, thats just the way it goes.

My buddy cleaned up, and put new barrings in the seized Webra 45, it almost looks new.
