I just got my kit after waiting for a month. I've been in the r/c hobby for almost 2 years, flying a nexstar trainer. I decided to build so I could learn how do do repairs and how to set everything up myself. I have a question already. I have epoxy (30 min.)' thin and med. ca. And Elmers carpenter glue:
1: Is the yellow carpenter glue ok to use? or should I get some white stuff?
2: When doubling the spars I'd like to use the Elmer's, is that ok?
3: when doubling the spars, is it better to pin it down, if so, will the pins be stuck in it with the glue and do damage pulling them out, or is it better to lay them on their side and clamp them?

Hi there! Good luck with your build. We will help you out as much as we can. Include some pictures as you go along too. I built the 120 size 4 Star and I love it.

1. The yellow carpenters glue is fine. Probably better than the white stuff.

2. Yep. Fine for doubling the spars. The only thing to watch out for with the Elmers is when doubling the fuse sides. You need to put some weight on the area to keep it from warping.

3. Yes. Use pins or clamps. Usually a twist of the pin will break it free so it can pull out OK.

You have all the correct adhesives you're gonna need. The "Yellow" glue is fine for the spars. Pinning them down is fine. Just give the pins a little twist to remove them if they're a little stuck.

n Adhesives: follow this link and you will learn a bunch. Airfield Models - Adhesives used for Model-Building link [/link]http://www.airfieldmodels.com/information_source/construction_materials_for_model_building/adhesives.htm

In a nutshell. Use aliphatic resin (Titebond, Elmers Carpenter's Glue (NOT white glue!)) for all construction situations. If you have a high stress / load bearing joint use epoxy (30 minute stuff as the 5 minute stuff deteriorates over time).

I built my 1st plane (4*60 too) before I found this source of information. I used Titebond II for all locations except laminating the fuse sides (30 minute epoxy heated with a heat gun), doubling the spars, securing blind nuts and sealing the engine bay and tank bay. I limited the use of CA to things like hardening threads on the wing mounting blocks.

Hope this helps.

I also built a 4*60 as a 'first' kit build in over 30 years. You will love building this Sig kit, it is just an excellent kit!

I learned the hard way about the straight pins through glue. I tore up a few pieces of balsa by pulling them straight out! Once I learned to give them a twist first, they came out clean.

You will need some clamps in certain situations, and I suggest you stock up on clamps. Clamps are one of those things you will find very useful and handy to have. I buy them cheap at Harbor Freight Tools in the USA. Princess Auto probably has something similar in Canada.

i'm one day ahead of you with 4*60, i did the dublers against the table and the glue of one doesnt touch the others and there is wax paper on top too so it wont stick to the clamps.

I'm just getting started, i'll post these pics and see how they turn out.
1. I opened up the box
2. Read the manual through about 3 times
3. laid everything on table to start doing inventory

Good luck on the build. Just thought I would warn you, dogs LOVE to chew balsa (don't ask how I know).

dapam--Once you assemble the wing dry, thin CA dripped sparingly onto where the bracing touches the spars and TE makes the job go very quickly. i know a lot of guys eschew using CA glues, but they sure speed up construction. Not that it has to be done in one sitting, but when you're in the mood to build, it's hard to wait till the next day for yellow glue to set. Just my $.02.

BTW, don't use Titebond or Elmers to laminate balsa sheets unless ya like some very nice warps. Been there, done that.

As for edge joining two balsa sheets at their edge the preferred is to use wood modeling cement (in the tube). Check the following link: Airfield Models Edge Joining Balsa

Back to the basement for more sanding, gluing, sanding, etc. Yea - I sand the building materials before I glue 'em so that the inside looks as good as the outside (me anal? nahhhh - just an illusion).

Have fun. Just remember, you can fix just about any mistake you might make.

Looks like you have a good building surface and some good tools. However, I would suggest a more robust beverage

And, oh yes, ahem ... "GO SENS! ..."

You should enjoy building your 4*. It's a nice kit and I had a lot of fun building and flying mine until I crashed it. Sure do miss it.

LOL.... alcohol and airplanes rarely mix too well. As for caffine, it only speeds the build process.

I did inventory and found a piece missing. And another piece in it's place. So I called Sig, and they are sending me out the piece right away. I used 30 minute epoxy on the spars. I wonder if I should leave it clamped overnight. I'm sort of anxious to get at this thing. More pics:
1 short one piece on inventory.
2 I have extra bulkheads in it's place
3 The bulkeads I sorted out
4 Cutting the spars
5 Clamping them down.
