We had that discussion over on the Patty Wagstaff Extra 300 thread. On mine I had already CA the ailerons so this time I thought that I would go with the Robarts from the start.

Counterbalancing the elevator is intriguing. How would you do that? Put lead in the most forward part of the elevator?

Andy

If I can do it without damage to elevator halfs already installed - I thought about attaching (mig weld??) piano wire to elevator bar extended forward of hing line into tail cavity with a lead wieght attached. Lead bell fishing sinker epoxed to piano wire.
May have to do it later - need to get this one ready.

Oooo! I like that idea! I guess you could do the same thing with the rudder?

I will have to consider it.

Thanks!

Andy

Or a couple wheel colars might hold the wire in place.

Soldering the wire would probably be better. Less heat then Mig welding.

Just my 2 cents.

Here is the reply that I received from Robart.

Andy:
Within the next couple of weeks, Robart will be looking into whether we can develop something for the nose gear of this airplane.
Sincerely

I'm using Robart's # 654 off of my deceased TopFlite C-182, you will need to do the following to make it work, find a thinner wheel like a Dave Brown 3" foam ( this will also need to be cut down a little, chuck it on the drill press a sanded about 3/16" off of it ), use a piece a brass tube to increase the O.D. of the strut in the bracket area to 10mm, get a little beefer spring. remove the lower strut and fork from the supplied unit. I heated the lower strut at the very tip enough to break the fork free from the Wheel Pant ( BECAREFUL----GO SLOW !!!!! ), file a slot for the lower scissors to slip thru. This may eam like a lot of work but it to me a total of 20 min. to do this, the product is already on the market so you will not have to wait. Of course you can skip a couple of steps and use the block that comes with the Robo, I just liked the neat little Alum. supplied in the kit.

Robart also makes a RoboStrut that could also work but you would need to drill out the Alum. bracket from 10mm to 7/16" and I believe that this may weaken it.

Hope this helps, Thanks...Don

Thanks Don,

I'm thinking about having a block of aluminum machined to take the 7/16" tube, maybe use some delrin (sp?) bearings to prevent the metal to metal contact. Then the only other problem that I see is the wheel pant. How can I get it off with out damaging it?

Thanks again for the tip.

Andy

Remove the lower strut and pant from the spring, I took my torch and heated the top part where the set screws go, go slow and keep checking the fork for movement, the heat at the tip will work it's way to the fork, I had to get the tip RED HOT to get enough heat to the fork, again just keep check it, make sure that it releases gently and does not distort the fiberglass, oh yeah might want to have a bucket of water around. Let me know how it turns out...Don

Had to shorten engine box. Reinstalled original firewall and added widened 3/8 ply to front. Balance as shown is very close using ignition. Making gussets. Will probally install servos for choke and throttle at firewall since balance does not appear to be a problem.

What a nice job. the box looks origional. How much clearance is their between the cowl and the flywheel?
what prop will you use?
Pretty sure that the fuji 50 electric start will fit. Ill know more today.

I just checked and the fuji 50 will fit completely inside with the starter and the stock muffler !!! except a small fraction of the plug wire. It will go with the wire unpluged...???????
I wonder if anyone has a shorter plug for this motor. I have it mounted on a vibration isolation mount from great planes. The entire mounting box needs to be removed.

Hereis another picture with the juji.
Also it will be interesting to see how some of these different engine installations come in in weight and balance.

For those of you looking for a more scale nose gear, look at this post to see what I'm working on. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=800867&s=#800867

Darrell says that he could customize the larger nose gear for this airplane.

If you are interested, check it out.

I would think this would work check out (#664) at the bottom of the page.
Need to come up with a mount, But it does have a scale drag link, and is 7/16 the same as the kit strut.

PS: Is the ultimate spinner available in a 3.25" all I can find is 3.50".
