Been out twice now, first time out the frt pinion gear set screws came loose (pre assembled) and slide off PLASTIC frt diff gear and managed to take 20% of the end of the teeth with it. Chain came very very loose on first time out, but turns out the chain did not stretch as much as I figured it was the stamped steel engine sprocket plate bent out/pulled away from engine leaving the pully and drive mechanism on an angle. Will have to fix that. Also rod running from frt assembly to rear assembly mounting point bent at engine which is also part of the assembly pulling away from engine. Pics later when I get home. Other then that it looked like a nitro truck pulling a 4 wheel drift slide as it arched around a corner

My impressions so far. Cheap kit for a cheap price-what should I have expected - Ehh!

good review, and i suspected the same on the bending when u look at the brackett, its pretty cheap, let us know the exact week points, i'll start fabing stronger pieces for mine.

This is why we built a whole new MT to try this out cuz it is going to take some creativity and refabrication. When all the bugs are fixed we will decide about converting the rest... It sure did look cool to see the 4wd in action on the ice and snow banks tho!!!

Ok, these are pics of <15 min run time and machine has been run in snow so its not like there is alot of traction yet.

Steel pinion loosens off and moves over-again this part comes pre-assembled.

Gears no longer lining up after carrier assembly bolted to engine bends and fails in multiple areas.

Link rods hold but plastic end pieces strip out very easily. But bracket bends as you can see the bolt is no longer straight. This damage is due to the chain when operating trys to pull frt diff and engine together.

Now check out this new carnage again less then 15 min in. The bearing is floating loose and I assume there was a spacer there because it was not loose when I installed the kit.

Send it back to KAMI, tell them it needs more of the bugs worked out before they sell the kit. Show them the pictures, there is no excuse for crap like that!

Well I got my Kami kit Tues ,Thanks FG Universe for fast excellent service. I too incountered the same problems as PBJT but I think I I solved them. Nothing in this kit has thread lock so be sure to check includeing the set screws that hold the drive pins in the dog bones, learned that from previous posts. Here are some pics of what I found...
First move the steering sevo over and you'll have to mess with the likage to make it work

Pic of the assembly on the engine

This is the spacer or squish block on the rear diff assembly, I had to take an 1/8 inch off the lenth to get proper gear mesh.

I then set up the new spur gear to pinion mesh and tightend up that assemby
Nothing would fit after this point so I first put the tounge of my chassis in a vice and bent it up just enough (very little) this allowed the chain to fit .
I also had to shorten the one tensioning rod on the throttle servo side by 3/16 of an inch to get everything to go together.
After these ajustments the chain was not singing tight tight anymore so a half turn on the tension rods and it was perfect.
I then bench ran the truck for fifteen minutes looking for any problems. After I ran it on the bench the whole mechanical assembly was silky smoth, no binding no stiff spots and the chain was snug but not tight

All that being said I guess it does'nt mean anything yet untill I run it for real!!
I will let you guys know how it goes after the weekend

Yeh I know, the instruction or lack of them are crap! lol
I think the block must be there so if you have to ajust the chain tensioning bars it won't push the engine back and make your rear spur pinion mesh to tight.

I bought an FG baja recently (love it) but I miss the 4x4 control I had with my nitro trucks. I was looking to get the kamitiro belt drive kit from hobbythek and convert it to chaindrive (I have spare diff and all the other bits needed to complete the conversion) #25 chain easy to get off the web and the sprockets you can get from Kamitiro.
The advantage of the belt drive kit is that it's all alloy, I've seen it on a marder on utube and it's definately the way to go...however hobbythek told me it doesn't fit the baja too good and you have to chop the body up.so now I'm in 2 minds,
1/ it'd need a bit of fab work to move the front shocks forward instead of backwards and some shift point set up wizardry cos I want to keep my 2 speed which means running two 2 speeds which also means a longer kami layshaft and more money; it can be done though (no such word as can't)
2/ wait for the release of the FG 4x4, I have been told that it coming out for sure between April and July by Hobbythek and others but conflicting reports on whether it'll be belt drive (like their 6 yr old prototype they wheeled out every year since 2002) or shaft drive. The most recent pictures in FG's newsletter show enclosed diffs which looks like shaft to me...and I'm told a kit will be available to convert all offroad 2wd FG's.

decisions decisions

Awsome review Gas Jocky, this kit looks like some ad-hoc / backyard, cobbled up gizmo that requires you to butcher your car to make it fit.... NOT FOR ME.

well, got mine together, and i've got some issues, the gears behind the motor no longer mess, and the chain is to short as someone pointed out. I took all the adjustment out, and with the chain on, and the motor lose, i can not mesh the rear diff and its sister gear. Its almost like i need to move the rear bulkheads ahead or 4 more links of chain.

No Moa-Shim the rear diff up using two washers on each screw hole using longer screws as well. Raising the rear diff allows you to mesh the gears correctly with the engine further forwards. Yes I know washers are crude and there is actual shims but at this point I need to see this kit in action.

Our FG MT 4X4 is back together. I welded a second plate together on the engine plate to keep it from flexing and bending and plan on giving the machine another run again tomarrow.
