Another day, another SPAD.... Come spring, I have about four planes to maiden. I gotta quit doing this.

This is basically a Derelict, with a Dogfighter tail. I built the Derelict per plans, with the yardstick cut down to 7/8" as suggested in the instructions. I first built the Derelict V-tail, but changed to the traditional tail with round vertical stab because I like the way it looks. I can always switch it back.

My old combat plane had a Defender wing made of 4mm coro. That wing weighs about 18 ounces. This new wing weighs 9!!!! (~11 ounces with servo and pushrods). I can't weigh the whole plane, but by adding up the parts, it should be around 46 ounces. It's a bit heavier than called for in the instructions, but that's probably due to my using 2 1/2" pipe. I can't find any 2 3/8". I could probably drill some lightening holes, but let's face it, my piloting skills (or lack of) are my real limitation.

Power is from an OS .25FX.

As usual, I spent more on decals than on the airframe

Nice looking plane. Looks alot like the Dogfighter. She should fly nicely.

Just for fun, I took a group shot of all of the SPADs I have built, re-built, or scrapped since last fall. The first step in recovey is admitting you have a problem...

My old combat plane - first SPAD
Gnat
SPA3DT - stole the servos from it before I even finished it
Delta
My new Derelict
And two trainers for my girls.

Hey, how'd that Four Star get in there?

Awesome looking combat plane
Great looking wing, I like the dogfighter tail feathers better too.

I maidened this guy today. It was the one plane out of three that actually flew, and it flew great. I had to give it a few clicks of down trim to stop it from climbing - it may be a touch tailheavy. It rolled great. Inside loops were very tight, probably too tight, and outside loops took me frighteningly close to the ground .

I flew it with the 9x6 that I used to break in the engine. I noticed that I didn't seem to get any additional speed between 2/3 and full throttle, just more noise. I mostly just cruised around at 1/3 throttle for the maiden flight, and it handled great. I will switch to a 10x4 for future flights. That is what all of our combat fliers use with this plane/engine.

what happened to the trainers? did they not fly good? congrats on the maiden!!! I started the corro star 60 tonight ( like the sig 4* 60). I also have been flying the enlarged deb, daspadstick and demon. I also have been working on a slow poke design. simular to smooth spankys but I'm going for the slow poke profile. that should be a cool plane also

The first trainer, the one with the giant orange wing, has flown, and flew really well. We haven't had a chance to take it up again since January. The second one, with the .25 hasn't been maidened yet. I haven't had a chance to fly on a day when I can bring the kids, and they want to be there when their own planes fly.

There is a possibility that I can maiden the second trainer this Sunday. I'll let you know how it goes. At least I have a spare .25FX now if the .25LA is a little too weak.

The Coro Star's look really cool. I'd like to tackle one of them some day. I have a Sig 4*40 and I love it.

Thanks

The Coro Star is a nice airplane to build and fly. I've built 2. One with a Supertiger 50 with ultrathrust muffler and then upsized the dimensions by 25% and built one with a OS 91. with retracts. Both fly great.

Here's a video of the new Derelict. Most of the time it's just a fast moving speck, but she did a pretty good job of keeping it in the frame.

The kids you hear screaming in the background are not mine. A family had shown up to watch our fun fly, which was cancelled due to weather. They were a bit distracting....
