I suppose I can live with the long antenna. It doesn't seem to bother most people. And like you said I think the performance of the Quark will make up for it.

Status: offline 		Just be careful not to break / bend the long antenna. Being careful shouldn't be that hard since you will be in "careful mode" anyway when handling the helicopter. I broke a long antenna off one of my other heli controllers. I much prefer the 2.4, but oh well, I'm having a blast with my Quark.

Status: offline 		Maybe a stupid question, but how do you guys hold your Tx when flying the Quark?  Antenna pointing towards the sky (up) or towards the ground (down) or somewhere in the middle?

I only ask because I've noticed better range and less heli flakiness if I point the Tx antenna down towards the ground when flying.  I've been practicing with the heli and on the sim with the Tx antenna pointing up, so this way feels a bit strange, but I guess I'll get used to it if in fact that's what it takes to get some reliable range out of this FM radio.

Otherwise, if I point it up, I only get about 30 feet of reliable range with the heli.  Outside 30 feet the throttle locks, rudder locks, etc. - occasionally, though.

(Tx antenna extended fully, Rx antenna wire hanging straight down - not wrapped, fresh batteries - tried both alkaline and NiMH, not pointing Tx antenna at heli, etc.)

Status: offline 		30 feet seems like pretty short range to me, but I guess I only fly up to probably 30 to 40 feet away - when I think about it.  I suppose my antenna is about midway between horizontal and vertical (pointing up).

But, I flew the Quark about 150-200 feet from me yesterday, all while keeping the Tx antenna pointing horiz or down.

Status: offline 		Wow, that must have been hard to see, particularly if you're flying the factory white version.

I think eventually putting a yellow canopy on mine might be a good idea.  I painted a white Mini Titan fuselage using Tamyia paint intended for painting from the inside of a clear body.  It came-out well with a decent sheen, and it has proven to be durable, even though it's on the outside.

Another option is Krylon paint for plastics.  That's what I'll use next time around.

Status: offline 		Yea, it was a bit hard to see - to the point of making me uncomfortable.  Luckily it was moving fast away from me, so I knew it's direction.  Had it been in a hover for a few seconds I probably would have lost it.

Mine's still white, but with a different color scheme - somebody else painted their's yellow and I thought it looked very nice.

By the way, I've had at least one incident with my Quark where the control signal seemed be be lost and it went down on my lawn.  I'd guess it was spurious interference.

I sure wish we didn't have to have that antenna wire hanging down, but that would be my only gripe about the Quark (that and the fact that it's FM and not 2.4).

I've really enjoyed mine.

Is it possible to wrap the antenna wire around the tail boom like this and still have the same range, or do you lose range setting it up like that?

Status: offline 		Good question.  I've seen other models with the antenna wire spooled around the support legs for one skid.  I had an EF Sabre from Hobby People that was assembled that way from the factory.

I don't know a definitive answer, but the Sabre seemed to get along fine that way.  On the other hand, I think I recall reading in the Quark manual that the antenna should extend down from the heli - maybe because it's a little short in length.

I suppose you could carefully test the range by asking someone to hold the heli while you stand farther-and-farther away and move the controls (excluding the throttle).

I think it looks better your way the way your wrapped it.  I think I'll try it too.

Just flew two packs outside with the Rx dangling full length (25").  It didn't seem to do any worse than wrapped & 12" dangle (default).  Still had to point the Tx antenna down for best range (reliable, that is).

I received an email stating that a 2.4Ghz CP heli will be available this fall from Hirobo, yet Hirobo claims nothing is planned.

I suppose that could just be a marketing reason keeping things hush-hush, to sell more FM Quarks before a new 2.4 version is released?

I agree with this - I'm sure Hirobo is well aware that as soon as a 2.4G version is available the FM version will instantly drop dead unless it undergoes a substantial price cut.  Their need to keep current Quark sales alive and strong (for as long as possible) is probably extremely important to them given today's worldwide economy.

Have enjoyed reading this thread, and like with all the others, because of the great comments on this heli I now am interested as well... Not the best time actually, ordered a new 4#3B V3 Double BL a week ago (before I ever heard of this Quark). How am I going to explane to the wife that I really need this heli as well...? :-)

Anyway, contacted Greg with the info provided here. We'll see what he comes up with...
