Hi guys!

Well, I thought I would post a forum on a build of my U-47. I have had this for about a year and a half gathering up parts from various vendors and have gotten busy at finishing it. So this is sort of a post on a build.

Anyway, the sub has been built so far pretty much following Robbes guidelines. I, like others, like to enhance and personalize things as I build so here is a list of what is being done to modify this U-boat

I have replaced the two piece locking system with a bayonet lock. I have this system on my Engel Lafayette and really, really like it. So I found a person that manufactures these bayonets and incorporated it into the build. I did have to modify the tech rach by cutting off approx. 1/4" on either side for it to fit comfortably into the WTC. Also, I did cut about 1/2" off the end of the WTC to keep the dimensions the same. The entire assembly has been affixed with Pattex Stabilit Express. This is about the best glue I have ever seen. It will glue anything.

Also of note is the propulsion. This is from Al Mateva of "Ships n Things". http://www.shipsnthings.com/ This little setup was not cheap but should allow for much better run time and more scale speeds. It consists of two Speed 400 motors on a belt drive mounted to an aluminum plate. It simply bolts right into the spot for the Robbe motors. I did have to trim the shafts by about 3/4" to make them fit correctly though. I also replaced the pushrod exits with brass units incoporating rubber o-rings. I have used these in the past on other projects and I like them. Also seen is the brass deck from Jason Overhauser at modelbrass http://www.modelbrass.com/ For the photos it is just placed on top of the boat. It looks like I will have to trim a bit off the front section (about 1/4" to make the decks fit flush but shouldn't be a problem.

I also am planning on using a servo to control the front dive planes. I am going to try out one of Traxxas's waterproof(?) servos http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXTKL0&P=SM We will see how that works out.

I am also going to install (not shown but I have it) a type VII conning tower from Acurate Armour. http://www.accurate-armour.com/index.cfm It is actually 1/35th scale but looks like it will work fine on this sub. I am undecided about which paint scheme to use but I find the two tone grey color scheme boring and dull.

As for diving, for now I will let it be a dynamic diver. After I get the bugs worked out I may decide to convert it over with Engel piston tanks.

Anyway, I will post updates as available and if you have any questions feel free to contact me.

best regards,
Pete

Guys,

Just a little update. I have been working off and on with the conning tower. I decided not to use the Accurate Armor tower. So, I opted for the plain old Robbe one, which was modified. I used the brass floor from modelbrass.com as I thought it looked good and would help with diving (the grates are all open) I am going to use an Accurate Armor periscope and snorkel, much more authentic looking. I also added the swastika on top of the flagstaff. I have a few deck details to add, teak inside the conning tower, radio loop, etc but its coming.

Painting is sort of free lance. I used German Dunkelgrau for the decks and lichtengrau for the structure itself. The blue splotches are sea blue. I saw this scheme somewhere and liked it. The boat will be lettered for U-9 (hence the sawtooth fish).

Again, I am not following any strict prototype. I am doing what I like best. More to follow as time permits.

Pete

Guys,

Well, the painting is 99% finished. Take a look at the updated photos. Most of the electronics are done, now I am just trying to think of the best way to wire in a front dive plane servo. Any suggestions?

i waterproofed a servo, placed it in a tray in the aft section under the deck with brass rod running through the boat under the tower
then with a snap connection to the front planes connection s also waterproofed using tubeing which fits over each other

That's just cool. How much did you get the robbe kit? I am considering getting one too after seeing your build.

Astroboy,

Welcome to the dark side of hobbies: submarines.

If you're interested in a large size Type VII, you may want to consider something like this. It will go well with my Bronkater next year.

Chuck
