Thanks Dave, it worked like a champ. This is a nice motor.
I have 56 flights of 11 minutes each when I noticed a lateral
movement in crankshaft. Need to check it out. This motor turns an
16-8 master airscrew at 8200+. It flies a Seagull Yak 90 very
well.

Well, turns out the bearings are fine (NGK). The
problem is the crank shaft. It was turned down too
small when manufactured. The front journal measures
(.47024") instead of (.47244").

A question for any gasser's out there. I was re-tuning my XYZ 50cc gasser this morning - finally got it right. Seems the low-speed needle was too closed, so the engine was cutting out at idle. And I opened up the high speed, which increased RPMs. So, good idle and high end, and smooth transition. Flew perfectly in the air, too, without the cowl. But once I put the cowl back on it ran like CRAP (in the air, seemed ok before takeoff). The engine would not advance to more than (it seemed) 1/3 throttle, no matter what I tried. Sounded like the engine was choking. Got it back safely, took the cowl off, and the engine ran perfectly again. Flew it, sans cowl, perfect engine response. So is the cowl cutting the airflow to my carb? Should I install a venturi to a hole in the cowl? (I've heard of this but never done it before.)

Or could this be a case of installing a nipple into the carb pressure plate and running a line to the body of the plane, for more constant pressure? Thanks.

Also, I'm curious what props and RPM's people are getting with the XYZ 50. I'm finding I get more airspeed with my 78" Texas Hurricane using an APC 18x10. Faster than an APC 20x10. I'm not doing 3D, so am more interested in speed. What props and RPM's are other's getting?

Make sure you have enough exit area for air to
evacuate cowl. If the engine over heats it will lose
power or stop. You should have at least twice the
size hole for letting air out as inlet size. The inlet
should direct air over the cylinder and head and
any other holes covered over.

Octopus - If the price of XYZ 20's increases it will be getting very close to DLE 20 territory. Do you think people will still choose an XYZ over a DLE without much of a price incentive? Do you have any videos for the XYZ 20 on Youtube?

btw - aren't YOU sales XYZ?

Hi all, hope to get some help here. I have an XYZ 53 twin. Love the engine so far but I haven't had more than 10 flights on it. Flew it two weeks ago and everything was peachy. Mtoday I got to the field and flipped it till I got a headache and it never started. I noticed fuel coming out of the carb so that wasnt the problem. On to spark. I pulled the plugs, grounded them against the jugs and no spark. I pulled off the ignition and noticed one of the black wires, the one that goes to the timing part on the engine, had some of the plastic covering scraped away. I put some electrical, tape over it and plugged everything back up. Now when I turn on the egnition switch, the ignition module hums. What dies this mean? Engine still didn't spark after numerous flips. New to gassers so any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Also, if the diagnosis is the ignition module, can I just get any ignition module or do I need one compatible with this engine? Not sure I like the xyz ignition module if it craps out after 10 flights.

Thanks in advance,

Dan

I have the XYZ 53 cc. Bought 4 RcExl ignition modules from Octopus RC.

2 to a Saito FG-57 and 2 to the XYZ 53 cc.

The two first worked for, say 10-10 flights. Then the spark becomes too weak.

The engines wont start.

So I bought 2 more in june this year. One of them never gave a spark. The other one can be started,
but only after, say, 10 - 20 seconds on a starter.

I also have RcExl on a G-38. Its beginning to show the same symptoms.

I have another set on a GT-80. It has been working so far, but it dont have that many flights yet.

I fear it will fail too.

Will try C&H Ignition now.

There is a discussion on it here;

I have sold well over 250 RCexl ignitions sense the first of the year and you have had more failures than all of them put together, You must have the worst luck of anybody I have ever seen or just doing something wrong.

And on another note, They have a two year warranty so why did not Octopus RC replace them.
