I just brought my 6 year old son a redcat racing shockwave buggie, and now I am looking for a car for my self. I am only looking to spend about $400 on it and it does not matter if it is a RTR or a kit. I just wanted to know what would be a good car at that price.

If you just want to have some fun, the Duratrax Raze is a great little buggy for the price. Very durable, plentiful inexpensive parts, and you pick it up as an RTR for about $350 out the door.
It has an average quality Futaba radio, and the SuperTigre .27 engine is easy to tune, and just about bullet proof. I have since upgraded my engine, but I keep the SuperTigre around and ready to use as a backup, since it such a great little engine.
Out of the box, I really don't think it can be beat for he money, and there are plenty of hop up parts if you want to upgrade stuff on it latter.
Customer support is superb with Duratrax if you ever do have any issues, and if a warranty anything on it, they will do that, no questions asked.
For $50 more, you can get the Raze ST truggy, if you want something a little different, and it comes with the same engine as the Raze buggy.
Hope that helps a little bit.

NO not if you are serious about racing. Keep in mind most RTR do not come with race legal engines. The Razor is basically a 9.5 platform and is out dated. Now for club racing many do not care what size engine your run.

There is not a lot out there that will be race ready for that kinda money. You bought your son a shockwave, have you looked at the huricane? Its a good starter. Its only 295.00

The Storm CL-1 is probably a better buggy than the Raze for the money ($315):
http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_info.php/cPath/1_44_48/products_id/12836
It is distributed by Horizon Hobby so support should not be a problem.

Or the Cen Matrix RTR ($350):
http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_info.php/cPath/1_44_48/products_id/9826
I hear Cen support is good to, and that this buggy is quite good for the money.

The Thunder Tiger ST-1 is probably the best buy for anyone getting into 1/8 bashing and racing, though ($300):

Of course, this is if you are willing to try out a Truggy.

Lastly, though, there is the Hyper 7, which is just an old, proven design that wont stop getting love ($300):

Finding parts for Habao / Ofna shouldnt be too much of a problem either. If nothing else, there are tons of parts on Ebay.

If you are interested in doing a little racing, for $419, Utimate Hobbies is having a sale on Losi 8ight buggy race rollers right. You would need to buy an engine, radio gear, and a few other things, maybe about $250 - $300 extra BUT, that is one of the best you can get, and an excelent investment. If they still have sale in a couple of weeks, I am going to get one myself.

I would think it would take at least $300 to $400 more and you are WAY out of his budget.

Just to make things clear for those that do not understand Ofna does not make anything they are just an importer and the Hyper is a Hobao. Ofna imports Hobao and Hong Nor.
