I have reading the spad forum but have not been able to find a starting point. I would like to use the power and radio out of an Aerobird to build a simple SPAD but cannot find how to build a flat bottom wing out of foam. I think I can figure out the rest but this has me stumped a bit. A pix or web site would be great. Thanks.

At http://spadworld.net/forum/ there is a forum named "Foam Building" that may help. Let me know if that helps.

Once you learn the art of dealing with coro, it is not very difficult to build a coro wing. Once I have all my pieces cut I can assemble a wing in about an hour and I am not near as fast some of the other SPAD builders.

For the smaller planes (36" WS or less) I build with foam. For the larger ones I use coro but there are others that build very small coro birds and quite large foamys with excellent results

I am in the process of building a flat delta wing, powered by the motor from my Aerobird Swift. I have little confidence that I'll get it to fly, but I'll post my results anyway. I should have it together this week.

Don't laugh, I have nearly an hour of my life invested in this "plane". I seriously doubt that it is airworthy. It has the Aerobird Swift motor, 7 cell NiCd, 12A ESC, a GWS micro RX, and two mini servos from Hobby City. It weighs about 18 oz, and is about 24" x 24". I have elevon mixing programmed into my TX.

Yes. The calculator I used for CG puts it at 11.5" back from the nose. I marked the CG and then positioned the battery to hit it. The battery is held on with velcro tape and a velcro strap, so I can easily make about 1" worth of adjustments without changing anything. Bigger adjustments will just require that I move the hole that the velcro strap goes through.

I don't expect this thing to survive much of a crash. The stabs are held on with toothpicks and Gorilla Glue, and the 4mm coro wing is not reinforced at all. I figure I have one try to make this thing work. I have plenty of coro and yardsticks, so I hope I learn enough to make the next one better.

Tomorrow's forecast is for 50 degrees, sun, and 3mph winds at lunchtime. I am planning on maidening this thing, my new Derelict, and my .25FX Delta. My photographers will be in school, but I'll let you know how they all fly.

It was a beautiful day for flying. Both of my Deltas failed miserably. This electric one is just WAY underpowered, and my .25 size Delta from my other thread just nosed into the ground.

My new Derelict, on the other hand, flew beautifully, and made the trip to the field worthwhile.

I am hereby giving up on Deltas.

I guess it's possible. How about, I am giving up on designing my own delta. If I ever do try another one, I will go with a proven design, and follow it to the letter.

Maybe something like The Foamy mentioned in the July 2007 edition of Model Aviation. One of the lighter ones might work, and they can be made with styro meat trays. They are not delta's but something close.
