I attended my first Top Gun this year and had a great time. I'm in upstate New York and we have NOTHING like this up here. I negotiated a single day to myself during our Disney trip, leaving the wife to handle 3 kids alone. I dont mind the $25 pit pass, but I didn't know about it and didnt have it with me. I had to choose between pit pass or food and drink for the day. I could skip lunch but it was 90F and I had to drink. I didnt know who to be mad at, the show for not advertising that actual admission was $35 or myself for traveling 1200 miles to go to a show and not bringing more cash. The show was great just the same. The Thunderbird F 16 was worth it alone. I do know I will do my part and bring more cash next time. I hope Top Gun does the same by advertising with greater accuracy.

Then who would you propose to foot the bill? As you found out, it ain't cheap and someone has to pay the piper. Maybe next year we can have the competing event in Zehpyr Hills?

I understand that the local shows are free. This ain't a local show, and if you have never attended, you don't know what you are missing. It's cheap at $35.00. What you are missing, is that the pit passes are good for all 5 days. You can't see all of Top Gun in one day. At the great risk of being Tarred and Feathered, it is kind of like comparing your little podunk ASA car race to the Daytona 500. It just don't compare.

Frank Tiano ain't gettin' any more of my money. What a frikken ripoff $20 for a pit pass? Like I said, last year I fell for that scam, so this year I DID NOT attend...Neither did any of my 5 friends that usually go with me. To charge for an event to see planes is fine, then you get in and they tell you $20 MORE to SEE THE PLANES is bull#@$# Maybe the event WOULD be better off in Zephyr Hills !! At least I wouldn't have to battle I-4 traffic, (2 hours to go 50 miles) which was also a reason I did not attend

You can always cut your nose off to spite your face. I hate to see anyone that angry regarding their hobby, but the thing that you don't seem to understand, is that the rental on the Airport facility is several thousand dollars. The grandstand rental is several thousand dollars, not to mention the tent rental. Now Frank is a great guy, but would you expect to see him pay for the facilities for you to enjoy the show from his own pocket? The pit pass thing is a little out of control. We had a very difficult time with the judging due to so many people holding the pit passes. One group actually stepped over the ropes that were deliniating the judging area for static, and stopped to have a look at the plane on the judging table. They even got huffy when asked to move from the area. Also there were several instances where holders of pit passes were camped in the tents of the contestants. A pit pass does not give ownership. The show is constantly being tweaked, but it's not perfect. What it is, is the best scale contest that you will ever have the opportunity to attend. You could have attended all 5 days on your same pit pass, and the daily cost would have been 4 bucks. Instead, you worked yourself into a mad funk, and didn't come at all. It was your loss. Do you feel better now? As to it taking you 2 hours to drive from Zephyr Hills, I don't know which road you were taking, but I drove every day from Leesburg, and the longest commute was 1 hour and 10 minutes. It's 79 miles from my driveway to the parking lot at Linder.

ps.....You could have seen the planes from the grandstand without having to buy the pit pass. Have you ever tried to get into the pits at Daytona? That pass ain't free either, and it's more than $20.00 and it's only good for one day.

I too went for the first time. I too will not go back because of the ripoff pit pass thing. I hope the event changes their greed. I know the bills need to be paid some how, but don't have a hidden BS pit pass charge. I really enjoyed the planes and pilots. It was a good show I think. Also, it will be a jet rally in another few years... too many jets and not enough of the planes that made the event what it is today....

PS- as for coming over to the judges tent and saying hi...... will that cost another $25 too?

I've attended the last two events that Frank has put on being both FL Jets and Top Gun. Frankly, I think that he puts on a well run first class show!

No one is forcing anyone to purchase the close VIP parking, a pit pass, or to eat the food or drink the beverages there are no restrictions on brown bagging. The event is there for your enjoyment, only you can decide what you want to get out of it.

Too Expensive???? Well, Frank Tiano takes all the risk up front, and for that he is entitled to any reward coming to him providing things go well. If the weather is bad as it was at Florida Jets he loses money, the attendance was poor.

The Imperial Flying club the host club works its butt off helping make a memorable event for the attendees with little reward. The airfield, stands, trophies, signs, first class announcer, countless hours of planning. coordination of effort don't come cheap. The event grounds are clean, the sound system good, schedule of events well planned. Whats really not to like?

If anyone of you can present a superior event then please put your money and effort on the line. I'd love to attend!

Well said Steve, Frank puts on a show second to none. You have to be a cut above the rest to put on any kind of R/C event, but in a class of your own to make it an international event with years of history.

I feel there are doers and sayers, and I think we all know where most people stand.

I look foward to the next big event, no matter who takes the risks and does all the work that no-one ever says thanks for.

I for one say, Thanks Frank, for bringing us an event that few men could.

Why should we put the event on? We're spectators, not promotors..... in other words, we are the consumers... I guess in this day in age, the consumer gets what he or she gets... and not what they feel they deserve for a set price. I would not have driven 2 hours to the show only to learn that money just allowed me to go in and spend money on planes/parts/food. That entry fee I paid allowed me entry and access to spend more money. I sat high in the stands and I could almost see a landing through the crowd. I guess it was just not what I had expected. No big deal, just not for me. I would have gladly paid $10 more to get in the pits, but not $25. The food was good and so was the sound and announcing, I say that.

I have been reading this post for a day now and I must say that the Top Gun is the most premier scale event in the world I have had the honor to compete 4 times now and and we the pilots not just have to be invited but pay much more than the entry fee, parking pass and pit pass and I pay it gladly. Frank is a top notch professional and puts on Top Gun with a touch of class second to none.

I dont understand why folks are so upset as mentioned before you can go to a backwater dirt track race for a few bucks but you must pay more for a Daytona or Grand prix style event and thats what Top Gun is in our world the best of the best in the world of R/C Scale and still puts on a very entertaining noon time show. the pit pass? well its acceptable the food, go to an inferior baseball game and buy a 7 dollar hotdog. My pit/tent was one that had folks come and take the load off their feet but it got to the point we had to ask for permission basically to get to the plane to prep it for flight sort of say and thats not an issue. We are not premadonnas of R/C just that there is alot of stress and the caliber of competition is very fine (the best) and we all go to win or at least try if not why go? never the less FTE puts on a world class event and to be able to look forward to an event such as this one is a great pleasure and an Honor. Kudos for a job well done to the Imperial R/C club and all the coordination folks that went into Top Gun 2008.
my 2 cents
