Status: offline 		Maximum demonstrated crosswind for the A319-320 is 33kts and 38kts with gusts. Weather reports there were for gusts up to 49kts. Not sure of the crosswind component, but obviously quite a bit. I have over 3000 hours in the A319-A320 and I can tell you that landing in a strong crosswind is always interesting. You ask the flight computers for something and you may or may not get the combination of flight control deflection (aileron / spoilers) that you really want. Now, tell the computers that you want to cross control (slip) to land in a crosswind and you are in for an interesting ride. But it does appear in this case, the wind was just too strong regardless of the flight control logic.

The report with the video said 155mph cross winds. I at first thought that was an exageration, but watching the video it may have been fact.

I tried to get up the Video of the landing but instead got the following when a bos popped up with the following information

Yahoo News:
Video Quality

Your Computer Is Currently Unable To Play The Selected Clip. Go to "Solutions" page to see what is required to proceed.

On Solutions Page: found the following:

We have checked your Operating System: No action Required. We have checked you Internet Browser: No action required
in really small letters was the following: Supported platorm or configuration.

Then came "Yahoo requires the following components to provide an optimum video experience. To Download these FREE
Software Applictions, click on Links below and follow directions.

Clicking on Links as above directed I got: Yahoo requires Macromedia Flash Player, ver. 8: Action Necessary
We have checked your Quick time Player: Action necessary. Quick Time needs upgraded/installation on computer...
Click Below, etc, etc.

Now what is that all about? Up front it said my systems were checked and no action was necessary. Clicking on the links I find some things that "need action." And it already said there was none necesary! Up intill recently I was able to view all videos listed on RCU, now though, and just about everywhere else, now Yahoo throws this stuff in. I even tried downloading their stuff but it didn't work. So at present I can't usually see ANY video presentation on my computer. This is wild! I can still click on most videos on RCU and watch the presentation. Do I have a problem or not? Any suggestion/

Status: offline 		No it took blind luck to get out of a situation they shouldn't have been in in the first place. Not necessarily shooting the approach, but letting the low time FO do it and letting it go that far before going around.

The diagnostic said that your computer and its operating system was fully-capable of plalying the videos. However, you need certain applications installed to play them, and those applications need to be updated. Different things. It's like saying that your car and engine are capable of driving on the highways, but you need to get new tires.

Status: offline 		Was that plane in a little bit of a crab, or is it just me?? Looks like there was a knot or two of crosswind, what do y'all think?
All's I know is that even getting that low was difficult, and definitely scary. The pilot also had good vision to correct HOW he did, in other words he started crabbing again instead of trying to abort the landing straight-on...like you normally would.

Let me announce that I'm glad I wasn't on that flight!

Status: offline 		The report I saw on national news said that the wind was gusting over 100mph and it was a strong sidewind. I think that last "crab" was do to weather vane effect rather than intentional. It looked to me that when he corrected and kicked it around straight that the wind got under the right wing and lifted it. When I was first learning to fly, my trainer would do that trick a lot. I lost track of the times it got flipped on it's back just taxing out to the center line when a gust got under the wing. The trainer is easilly repaired, but that plane was as close to a major accident as you can get and still fly away.

I also saw on the first news report that the plane was repaired and in service again. This was something like 18 hours from the incident. Either the wing tip didn't really touch down as it appears in the photo and video, or those are some really tough wings.

Isn't this the same type of aircraft that lost the vertical and crashed in Long Island just after 9-11? That was attributed to wake turblance from jumbo just ahead. I can't imagine a worse whipping than the one in the video showed.

Constant aerodynamic pressure is not as hard on a flying surface, as a sudden jolt from on direction to another..

Status: offline 		I didn't notice... did anyone mention which airport this happened at?

With any significant wind at all, they would have changed runways. If it was gusting to 100, then the airport would have been closed unless the plane had some type of in-flight emergency and they just absolutely had to find the ground, regardless.

Just my opinion (and about 2500 hours aircrew experience) here.
