I had a small crash with my RV-4 yesterday.. nothing too bad but one of the broken things was the piece of wood that gave the wing dihedral and connected the two haves together. Lucky me I had not tossed out the kit box and all the balsa wood sheets that the pieces were die cut from.. So instead of trying to fabricate and guess on what will work, I have a perfect patter for just about every piece on my plane. So I just traced it out, dremeled the outline to cut a new piece and I am back in business. Barring doing a lot of kits and running out of room I think I will save them on all future kits I do. Being new to flying is this something a lot people do and no one told about it?

Some dedicated builders will trace each and every part for future repares and keep them on sheets of paper. They store a little easier than the fragile peices of balsa and light ply. And it always seems I end up using some of that scrap for reinforcement or modifications.
