Come down this time Mike, you'll see the smoothest, longest lines you can imagine with the Prodigy.

Twice as good as your Biplane

Paul, that thing looks big enough to ride to work!

All this talk of EDF really has me itching to have a go, the speed, the sweet sound of a fan spooling up, as soon as my new job starts I think my hangar might double in size overnight...scary thought.

I've been painting my P40 all day, god acryllic takes a long time to brush on, I'm using a fairly simple teal green top and grey underside for a scale 'Flying Tigers' scheme that faught the Japanese from chinese bases during WW2. The more i read about this plane the more i love it, it's a real unsung hero, the two defenders that managed to get off the ground in Pearl Harbor were both P40s and ripped the Zeros to shreds. Anyway the acryllic finish is great, it's a nice smooth matte finish, just wondering if i should top coat it with something (foam safe obviously) to seal it all. Maybe it'll be ok.

Everything is still in pieces at the moment so not much point of a happy snap, i'm painting before i put it together to make things a bit easier. I think this one might take over a week to finish, hopefully it'll all be worth it and i won't ditch it on maiden....

Cheers

Andrew,

The key to acrylics is many light coats. Don't put it on too thick. In fact... water it down and apply many coats. Use a hair dryer between coats to help it dry very quickly.

ALSO.. so far the only foam safe clear coat that I have found is the Tamiya Clear rattle can. I think the thing that kills the foam is the propellant. The Tamiya is definitely safe.

Cheers

Hiya guys - had a second fly of the EZCub, not too good!! I couldn't use my usual flying site cos of Illegal use by kids on Motorbikes, litle sh..s So I had to hand launch this 54in w/span plane from my slope site. Nearly full throttle with just a touch o up elevator had it shooting off and lightly up....no problems there. But when I had to apply some control on the rudder and elevator it was as twitchy as a drug addict doing col turkey...all over the place. I just managed to get it down without too many problems (just a nose over on grass) and went home o check everything. All was Ok, CoG spot on, elevator settngs as per manual (15mm up ele, 12mm down). Now I love the DX6i, its cheap, advanced as they come, full range and oodles of settings to play around with.....but there's a problem!!!!! The manual explains all there is to know about setting up the TX, expo, trim, everything. But not a bloody sentence to explain WHY you need this or that applying. What do I set if the plane is twitchy, what do I set if it wants to stall all the time etc....Nothing, Nada, Zilch.
Please, please someone point me to a site or somewhere that explains the info I need. Even input from your goodselves is better than none.
To explain the flight....I applied a little up elevator to climb at a normal rate (30*) and the thing went vert. Thats not an exageration, it went Vert big time. I'm used to Strykers doing that but you don't expect it from so-called Slow-Flyer on a 250W o/runner on 2200 2S, 54in w/span and weighing 850+grm. Frightened the sodding life out of me - keep your EDF's , I'd beat you any day flat out......
Got to go to my LHS for n u/carriage for the BWacker....more money!! See you all tonight.....unless you've moved

TAM - Take a BEX and a good lie down mate.

OK... EXPO is your friend. Without it, your plane will be thrown all over the place. Expo makes the controls a lot smoother and means you need to move the stick further to get the plane to react. This way, little movements on your sticks will not make the plane jag in that direction.

Also... Dual Rates is your next best friend. Most times you set up a new plane, you will not need to have the servos throwing and their maximum. Only when you have a good handle on how the plane reacts in the air should you go full rates. AND depending on the aircraft... you may never need full rates.

SO I am going to give you what I use and you can experiment from there...

I have Dual rates set as follows...

LOW Rates= 50% Throw. (Use this to begin with... if not enough increase to 65%)
HIGH Rates =100% Throw ( once you have your bird dialed in)

I have Expo set as follows

LOW Rates = +30
HIGH Rates = +50

It will depend on the type of bird you are flying... but as I stated... start here and experiment. Fly her... bring her down and make a change... fly again etc etc.

Good luck mate... and let me know how it goes.

Cheers
-J

And don't forget to check out the recommended throws in the manual.

Thanks for the tips regarding acryllics Mong, i'd already spoken to a couple of guys at my field who have experience painting the GWS birds and the thin coats was definitely an important tip. I've used 2 coats on most places, 3 on the top and bottom of the wings; everything looks tops at the moment and I got my hobby city parts today so i'll start piecing this beast together tomorrow. These revised GWS kits are a lot of work but I think as far as foam kits go they're up there as long as you're willing.

Cheers

Tam,

Even though you say the COG is spot on, I would move it forwards maybe 1-2cms and see how you like it. Mong is right expo will help smooth it out. You might also try reduced throttle on the next flight. 250watts on a 850 gram slow flyer might be too much. Looks like a slight westerly breeze this morning, means I might get a flight in. Not as cold as CBR but getting close. We are well into single digit minimum temp's........Thought I lived in QLD!

TAM - Clovus has a point! We had a gut at the field who had a plane that was way overpowered. As soon as he throttled up, it pitched it's nose up instantly!!

What size prop you have on? It may be that you have too much thrust and not enough pitch speed.

Exactly what my wife keeps telling me Mong

Something that's true of boat props I know is that if the propeller had too small a surface area for the power provided, it will overspeed and cavitate at high revolutions, providing little or no thrust........does the same apply to plane props to the degree it occurs with boats??
Don't believe I have any combos that overspeed .......although that might be what happens when the MiniMag goes berserk and uncontrollable under full throttle with 7x5 on a 4W......don't go there often as it usually ends in tears.

Edit...sorry for the edit but it was a 7x5 prop

So here is a question...

Would it be possible to plug 2 3S batteries into the 6S port, and balance them both at once?

My charger can put out 5A, but it can only charge 5S. It does not have a 6S port and it would be great to be able to do 2 at once.

Cheers
