It is very possible to produce a Q-40 with a foam wing.

I recently built one of Matney Models Napier. Kevin is the owner. I am now building one of his AJ-2.

Napier construction is shown on a forum in Pylon Universe.

I just started another construction forum on the AJ-2. The AJ 2 forum is on the NMPRA site.

Below is a link on Matney Models:

Paulo,
I think the AJ-2 build is going to be powered with a Thunder Tiger enging, so the wing probably won't be built strong enough for a Nelson. With a proper spar, carbon fiber, and other reinforcements, I'm sure a foam wing can be built strong enough, although I've always used molded wings in Q40.

Does anyone have one of Lyles old videos of him doing a wing for Formula 1?

I think I have a copy somewhere, but not sure I could find it.

I think that might show Paulo some good techniques, but if I remember right, Lyle didn't believe in using CF strips on the spar at that time. I rember him holding up a metal ruler and showing how it would flex and bend, and that CF would do the same??

Still had some good stuff in it.

Would love to see a video of Terrence or Chuck laying up a complete Neme or Vortex.

Paulo,

The wing construction photos that are on the site are from an AJ that is currently being flown with a Jett SS.

1) The wing has carbon fiber on both the top and bottom.
2) The wing is joined with three 2 ounce layers of glass.

My Napier is currently being flow with a Thunder Tiger Pro 40. At least initially the AJ 2 will also have the same motor.

Kevin is flying his models with high powered Q-40 engines. I would think that if care is done during construction that another could also be flown with a new Jett or Nelson.

I have DVD full of pics on how to make a wood for Q/40. I give them to he who buy my kits. Done right a wood wing is as good any full composites wing may be better.
some pic to come later.

Carbon fiber on the top skin is wasted, since it does little in compression. The balsa skin (3/32" does that function quite well.

The three layers of 2 oz glass with staggered widths on the center is good, much better than a single layer of 6 oz cloth since it prevents forming a stress concentrater. On each layer, make the width double on the leading edge as the trailing edge.

I have always built my own foam wings for Q40 and Q500. I have always kept the weight of the airplane to within a couple of ounces of the minimum. None have ever failed.

All of the wings in the picture are foam core wings.

But if you use carbon as a vertical spar and carbon on the bottom for tension they work great.

Pretty much what I do Kevin. I use vertical spar, 1/8 lite ply with carbon tow on either side.
