I am trying to make a working fire engine ladder but I am having trouble try to think of a way to make the ladder open. I am going to use a ladder that is made similar to a channel iron, on fitting inside another. The problem is how to make the ladder extend. I have been trying to think of a lot of different ways but I am drawing a blank. I would like the ladder to extend between 3 and feet. I am still at the design phase so an idea is not dependent on what I have already made. Any and all crazy ideas will be considered.

Spring loaded with a cable holding the ladder in the "closed" position. Reel out the cable to extend the ladder?
Check to see how power antennas work?

hi cujo 77, use a standard servo convert it to a winch which is really easy to do, add a pulley to the top of the second ladder run a line to the bottom of the first ladder from the winch around the pulley hey presto.
I made a winch from a small standard servo and it will lift 14lb of weight more than enough for your ladder, hope this helps.

Rickster3057, that is exactely what I was think about but I couldn't think how to put it all together. Do you happen to have an image, link, or example of this?

Hi cujo77 yep got a link i got from the rc crawler guys shows you how to turn a servo into a winch, it was so easy, best thing is you hook it up to your reciever and you get proportional forward and backward movement so cool and so cheap.I lifted the vice to my pillar drill with it the other day.

you could do a pulley setup like the full scale do.. I work on fire trucks for a living so I can get you picks of ladder setups if you need them
