I missed the transition from Italy to China, Bought a new GS45 ABC and it now says China on the back plate

Is there any difference in the Italy Tigres compared to the China Tigres. I have had them both side by side and they look the same.
Does anyone know if there is a hidden difference?

As far as I know all the tooling went to China. The only difference is the workers, and
the...."Made in China" letters. Maybe someone has some more specifics, but I do know
that the quality is still good.

Dave - Thats good to hear...I have read some posts that there are differences....not sure if it is speculation or fact.
Hopefully someone with inside info will chime in.

Lots of folks badmouth the Chinese ones. I have had the italian and chinese STs and notice zero difference in reliabilty or performance.

There has been minor changes made. If any difference, the Chinese versions run smoother through the mid range.

My frist purchase after the move was new 4500, but it says made in Italy, then I bought a 2300, fine engine, glitch free carb. Recently I bought a new .51, my old one being from about 1992, the old one was perfect so is the new one and it says China on the backplate.

Super Tigre is still owned by the Italians (Garafoli?) who sent their engineers to China to supervise setting up the machinery, training of the operators etc for the simple reason that labour costs back in Italy were going sky high. Any changes to an engine will have been at the least authorised by the Italians.

Hello Yukonflyr:

I'm far from an expert of the subject of engines, however, I own a Chinese Supertigre G90 and G51. I prefer them to my OS 50sx, because the Supertigres are happy on 5% nitro and the 50sx is not happy on low nitro.

My next step to getting my OS 50sx to run the way I want is try fitting a Supertigre carb to it.

I can't speak for the other engines but I have two Italian made 40's and two Chinese made 40's. Each and every piece will interchange between the different engines and the only difference I have been able to find is a very slight port shape change. They seem to run the same with one small exception. The Italian engines will turn smaller props at higher rpm's than their Chinese counterparts. The difference is noticable with a 9X6 but not a 10X6. As you go smaller with the prop (424 pylon type stuff) the Italian motors respond in kind with more rpm's. The Chinese motors gain rpm's as well, just not as much as the Italian ones. It is my belief that the Chinese ports were designed with a bit more torque in mind and the resulting ability to turn a slightly larger prop for less noise being the goal. Basically it's more of an all around sport flyer type engine now. Hope that didn't add too much confusion.

When did the appocalypse happen?!!!! Making an OS run good by putting a SUPERTIGRE carb on it. Surely, the gravitational pull of the universe has been altered in some way!

Sorry, had to do that. It just struck me as funny after all the flack that the ST carbs have gotten over forums and to make an OS run better at that! I realize that there is a history but to see people's views change for the better, is a good thing. Of course, now the engines are probably going to cost us more with all the folks buying them up. Hello TCrafty:

I was waiting for somebody to respond to my remark.

I will explain why I'm hoping that the ST G51 carb will improve the performance of my OS 50sx.

I want to use 5% nitro in my 50sx. However, with 5% nitro the low speed needle will not lean out sufficiently for a good idle. It's always too rich. If I screw the low speed needle in, if fouls against the carb body, then the throttle barrel will not close properly to shut off the engine.

I'm a "newbie" and it took weeks at the flying field to work out what was happening with my 50sx.

I think that with a G51 carb fitted, I will be able lean out the low speed needle sufficiently.

I have tried using OS #F and OS A3 glow plugs in my 50sx, while the "hotter" plugs did improve the idle, it's still too rich.

In contrast, I've found my Supertigres much easier to tune without endless fiddling with glow plugs and what not.

I hope that make things a little clearer.

I have noticed the surface finish on the Italian ones is smoother than the chinese ones. Like they have ben blasted with finer beads r something. Not that this will affect performance in any way.

The best thing is the quality is still there and they are now more inexpensive than ever before. I bought a new italian S-61 ABC engine from tower in the early 90's and it was still around $50 more than today's price. These chinese ST's are an absolute bargain considering the shrinking value of our US dollar today.

Both the Italian and the Chinese ST are GREAT ENGINES.....
They are terrific engines, made to run hard and strong!!!

stg61abc - Its good to hear nothing but good news. I have read elsewhere that the China Tigres were not as good as the Italian ones. The Italian ones do pull a premium on the E site. It is obvious to me now that from all of the good responses that the China ones still have Italian blood in them and will run just like their former brothers.
