does anyone have the 46 size edge 540 by seagull if u do is it worth the money and how well does it fly thinking of a os 70 or sato 82 if it is a good plane

zippyz -> RE: seagull 46 size edge 540 anyone have one (3/7/2008 4:13:50 PM)

I would like to know also.I have been looking at this for awhile and was wondering if a .61 would be to much.
As far as the satio,I would go with the .82 it is only a few bucks more.I have the .82 in my funtana 50 and it works great.

OK2Fly -> RE: seagull 46 size edge 540 anyone have one (3/8/2008 4:00:34 AM)

I've never had any experience with this plane, but I know it's pretty cheap, so even if the Edge isn't the best flying plane, it'll still be a good value...

MetallicaJunkie -> RE: seagull 46 size edge 540 anyone have one (3/8/2008 4:38:58 AM)

from your experience what is the best flying aerobatic plane?

OK2Fly -> RE: seagull 46 size edge 540 anyone have one (3/8/2008 5:18:43 AM)

It's kinda hard to say. I really like the Hangar-9 90 size 3D planes, but if I could afford it, the best flying aerobats would be those big 40% Edges and Extras. So far, though, my best aerobatic plane is the Hangar-9 Showtime 90. It flies "pattern," 3D, full throttle, (not recommended) etc. I love it.

In a couple days, I'm gonna put a BCMA 26 gasser in the nose. That'll be interesting...

MetallicaJunkie -> RE: seagull 46 size edge 540 anyone have one (3/8/2008 5:24:46 AM)

looks good

OK2Fly -> RE: seagull 46 size edge 540 anyone have one (3/9/2008 9:40:26 AM)

Thanks, MetallicaJunkie.

So...has anyone picked up the plane yet?

munkybiz_9881 -> RE: seagull 46 size edge 540 anyone have one (3/24/2008 9:57:13 PM)

Picked one up this weekend. Its together and Ive got 7 flights on it so far. I put a OS 55 ax on it with a 13x6 apc, its still not broke in yet so I haven't been too rough on it, but it flies really great. Im thinking the 55 ax may be under powering the plane for true 3D, but we'll see. This is my first true aerobatic plane so Im a noob to scale aerobatics. Flying weight on mine right now is 6 lbs 2 oz, so I'll be cutting the weight down here and there later.

Kit quality is pretty good for the cost. Some of the metal hardware is lacking, such as the motor mount screws are junk, way too soft to be trusted as they stripped right away. Supplied motor mount is also not so good and will probably be changed soon. The wheel pants are VERY thin, and are very light but also very weak and need to be reinforced if used (I used them cause they look good to me). But all of the wood and covering is top notch and I'm very pleased with the buid quality of the parts. Well worth the money IMHO.

Anyone think the 55 ax will power this plane efficiently??

OK2Fly -> RE: seagull 46 size edge 540 anyone have one (3/25/2008 12:22:35 AM)

Yup, the 55 is good, but I would recommend breaking it in on a smaller prop.

munkybiz_9881 -> RE: seagull 46 size edge 540 anyone have one (3/25/2008 12:30:11 AM)

I am thinking that a 13x6 may be too much prop period. What would you recommend??

OK2Fly -> RE: seagull 46 size edge 540 anyone have one (3/25/2008 1:06:03 AM)

I broke mine in on a 12x6. Right now, I'm using an APC 13x4w, and it pulls good. The engine will pick up rpm after break-in. Just don't overstress the engine during the break-in period [use small props and no lean runs.]

rcmaster12 -> RE: seagull 46 size edge 540 anyone have one (3/26/2008 8:09:35 PM)

I am looking at one of these in the near future as a third or fourth plane. Would this not be a good idea? Is it too advanced for an Intermediate flyer? Could I power it with a 46? Do you need high performance servos or will standard ones work?

OK2Fly -> RE: seagull 46 size edge 540 anyone have one (3/26/2008 8:34:04 PM)

A .46 would be kinda on the low end for power. An intermediate flier would handle this plane just fine, and standard servos will be sufficient to fly the plane.The plane should be a good value for money.

lippitdoo -> RE: seagull 46 size edge 540 anyone have one (5/15/2008 9:16:21 PM)

I have flown mine 5 times. Had a dead stick landing this week and the thing was headed into a 12-14 MPH wind on approach. Not a good thing. It wanted to porpous on me. I would give it down and it would dive. Then I would give it up and it would almost stall. It came down very gentle in my opionion but took off the left landing gear. I have discovered that this is one weakness in this kit. It has a two peice landing gear. Two screws holding on the left and two holding on the right. I am going to take out all of the plywood in this area and replace and then put a one peice landing gear on it. This plane should be able to take more than I experienced this week. Other than that I have enjoyed this model. I am powering mine with a Evolution .46 and it has plenty of power. Maybe not enough to do the real expert moves but enough to pull most manuevers off. This is a really nice looking plane on the flight line. People comment that it is very nice looking. Enjoy!

freeair -> RE: seagull 46 size edge 540 anyone have one (5/18/2008 6:23:28 AM)

you really can,t go past using a good 4 stroke engine for both aerobatics and 3D . before i bought my Katana Freestyle 40 there were a couple of guys in the club that had these models , one was fitted with an o.s. 55 ax and the other was fitted with an o.s. 81 four stroke. the 55 powered model was faster but no where near as good as the 81 powered 4 stroker. this is why i chose the 4 stroke, big torque and big props.

HighPlains -> RE: seagull 46 size edge 540 anyone have one (6/18/2008 12:20:34 AM)

I've got four flights on one powered with an Irvine .53

It seems to be a pretty honest airplane, does not drop a wing in slow flight so landings are fairly easy. Only problem so far is that it needs more right thrust, very noticeable when you pull into a vertical climb.

I used all the hardware except for the spinner and engine mounting screws, plus a ball link on the throttle. Nothing I'd buy if scratch building, but seems good enough for a cheap ARF.

I did notice that the tail was very well aligned to the wing. Just the right thrust on the engine is off.

One mod was to box the front top of the engine box with a plate of 1/8" plywood and a bit of right angle stock.

Wingspam -> RE: seagull 46 size edge 540 anyone have one (8/12/2008 10:28:05 PM)

Just got mine today, hopefully I will have it ready for the weekend. This is one good looking plane.

I have a 55 ax that will power this beauty, I plan on using Hitec 645mg servos for all the control surfaces, a 2000 mah battery and an electron 6 receiver. Am I going over board on servos?..

Let me know what you think..

Wingspam -> RE: seagull 46 size edge 540 anyone have one (9/2/2008 11:03:07 PM)

Its all done.... total weight is 6.5 lbs, powered with a 55ax turning a 12x8 prop.. It flies well enough just not what I was hoping for.. It seems under powered. But will keep on trying....

dragnbye -> RE: seagull 46 size edge 540 anyone have one (9/3/2008 2:33:33 AM)

i have a extra 55ax and have been looking for a new home for it. i know this engine has to be good for this plane. becuse one day few weeks ago at the feild i was runing the engine up to full power and then the plane pulled the talbe for a good foot till i let back on the stick. iam not lieing about this at all so a 7 pound plane should kick azz

Wingspam -> RE: seagull 46 size edge 540 anyone have one (9/5/2008 2:33:58 AM)

On this plane what would be the best prop for speed?

I am currently using 12x8 it fly's ok.. I tried a 11x6 and could not tell any difference..

lassecfc -> RE: seagull 46 size edge 540 anyone have one (9/29/2008 10:14:10 PM)

i just buy a seagull edge 540 size 46. with OS.55ax and it´s a very good aero-plane, but need a 4 stroke

squidster -> RE: seagull 46 size edge 540 anyone have one (9/30/2008 1:13:17 AM)

hey wingspam,

just to let you know, this type of plane is not good for speed, you could actualy blow it appart if you go too fast so, i recomend to not try to get this plane to go realy fast.

just my 2cents

oh, for those wondering about a realy good aerobatic/3d plane, the extremflight 88" yak is a realy good and stable plane, I own one of those, they also have a 74" yak and a small electric and i bet they fly just as good

aps f4u -> RE: seagull 46 size edge 540 anyone have one (9/30/2008 10:22:43 PM)

I own the Seagull Edge 540 .60 with a Saito 125 and it is a wonderfull flying plane and you can't beat the price either! I upgraded my landing gear from the alum. ones to carbon fiber so it had a little more flex. The alum. gear were also pretty short and I needed a little more room for the 17x5 I am swinging and the carbon fiber gear gave me about 3/4 of an inch more lift. And like squidster said don't try for speed with this plane, you will have some flutter issues or could just rip those control surfaces right off! Either way great flying and great price!

aps f4u -> RE: seagull 46 size edge 540 anyone have one (9/30/2008 10:44:57 PM)

This is a pic of my Edge with the carbon fiber gear I put on it. If I remember correctly, it is the carbon gear for the Funtana 100. I modified it to work for the Edge. Much better in my opinion and taxies better on the grass runway than the old shorter alum. gear.

lassecfc -> RE: seagull 46 size edge 540 anyone have one (10/9/2008 1:14:12 PM)

I got a seagull edge 540 46size, with os ax55 10% nitro... nice plane look very good, and fly good, but it need move power and more weigth, it not hovering, too slow throttle respons, maybe a much bigger 4stroke or 2stroke with tun pipe
