Interesting anology and it exactly describes my experience with a PolyChoke. Interchangeble choke tubes are almost as bad. Of course it took me years to learn not to fiddle with the needle valve before every flight too.

Hey Ernie,

No worries!

The fuel I was running was 9% EDL and 6% castor*. The temperature yesterday was about 15C (59F).

(This is not my usual fuel, which is Southern Modelcraft 15% EDL and 2% castor. I have to say I hadn't given it a thought that a high-castor fuel would cause "thicker" oil to be vented.)

Cheers,

HS

* I think I previously said it was model technics dynaglow; in fact it is duraglow - dynaglow has only 8%EDL and 2% castor!

Highside,
I've been following this thread closely as I have a couple of four strokes and was wondering the same thing about the breather tube.

Here's a thought, if you're concerned the engine might suck back in a portion of the oil from the long tube you could put two check valves in the system, one to allow air to suck in as you have it now, and then add another to the other side to prevent oil from returning up the long tube.

Regards,

Here is my solution on the Saito .90 triple. This at least puts it all in the same place.

Hey Tip, Saito already makes a 2, one way valve setup just like you described. These are nice looking aluminum one way valves for about $8 or so. You have to tap the backplate for the 2nd one.

Highside, if you have time one of these days would you mind hooking a piece of tubing up to your one way valve and put some fuel or oil in that piece of tubing so we can see if it really is sucking at all or what it is doing?

Thanks,

Ernie

Tapped the inlet manifold of my 125 and connected the breather to it.I can tell you how much less gunk I need to clean off now after every session. Its been worth it!

Here's the Saito valves referred to.

Hi All,

Been a while since I've been on this thread.

Ernie - I finally took the cowl off and put 2" of pipe on the inlet to the one way valve. I put some after-run in this bit of pipe and started it up. It was pretty hard to see what was happening, but my guess was that the oil in the last bit of the pipe was shaken/vibrated out (even though I was trying to hold the pipe still), the rest of the oil appeared to cavitate (or at least get bubbles in it) but disappear in the direction of the engine. I need to repeat this on a test stand, the engine is soft mounted in the model and everything shakes too much.

Since then I've smashed the bottom off the model (forgot to start the timer on the Tx and ran out of fuel in a very, very, awkward place), repaired it and replaced the cline system with a perry VP30 regulating pump. This means that the breather is now run to a T piece, one arm of which connects to the pump and the other to free space via about 3" tube. Have yet to run it in this configuartion. But before this change I'd had 60+ flights with the one-way valve/long breather combo without any problems.

Toga-toga: I did the same to this 82a but subsequently had problems with the inlet leaking around the head seal. Like you though, no gunk and no noticeable performance change.

Anyone up for doing an OS style mod? Their latest 82 has no breather. Instead, the oil travels up the pushrod guide tubes and into the rocker cover. There is a small hole drilled next to the inlet valve, connecting the volume inside the rocker cover to the inlet volume around the valve. I've looked at my 125 with the thought of trying a similar mod. One problem would be the need to connect the two rocker covers together (its a single cover on the OS) so that the exhaust side doesnt fill up with oil.

:-)

Let me get a small drill bit, I've got an almost new SC FS30 that I'm willing to sacrifice

Edit: I know this is Saito related, but all our model thumpers have breathers (except the new OSes)

Ahhh, yes, the good old SC30 FS. We had a couple of those in a scale twin. It's now got OS FS30s in it. Nuff said. The conclusion we came to is that as the engine size reduces, the manufacturing tolerances become more critical. I have some bigger ASP and SC four strokes which have been great (the 1.20 in particular has been as good as gold), but those small ones were just dogs.

Slightly off topic...I ran with the perry VP30 pump. It ran just fine once it was started, but siphoning made it just too much of a pain to fuel and start (the engine is inverted and the tank is at the CoG and high in the fuz). So I'm back to the cline regulator (which is also running just fine and of course prevents any siphoning).

Good luck with the head drilling!

I've been checking it, and there's no space to drill a small hole inside the rocker cover on the little .30s.
As a side note, I've been very lucky with my ASP FS30, runs like a champ! Either way, collecting model engines is my game now
