OK, I've seen some information out there about good engine choices for the TF Giant P-51, but I still am not sure which one to choose. What do I want? I want really good performance and would rather not go through all the efforts in building for slow performance.

So here are the engines I have been looking at:

Zenoah G-62
Fuji BT-50SA
OS BGX 3500 (rather run gas though)

Which one will fit the best and give the most performance? Any better recommendations? Thanks for any help!

Brian

How about a 3W50? A bit more powerl than my Brisson 3.2
see how it fits in my 1/5.5 scale spitfire, the cowling on my spit is the same size as a TF P51...

The Fuji is around 47cc and not a real stump puller. The 62 is MORE than enough power( a rocket) with a 20x8-14 Zinger. Things to consider/ The 62 works best when you have a 2 1/2in prop nub made to move the engine back so you dont have to butcher up the cowl for the cylinder./ the 62 is side exhaust, if you use a B&B style muffler, you will have to cut open the side of the cowl. If noise isnt a concern, make a short header pipe angled down and keep the scale looks. These items are also valid on a Q52 which is perfect in terms of power. These prop hubs are machined by a couple guys I have dealt with both at $25 delivered. Tom Perry in Melbourne,Fla. and Ralph Cunningham in Az. Am flying one now with a 52 and am building one with a 62 for a friend.

Brian,
I have one that I monokoted. It came out 22 lbs with a moki1.8.Flew like a dog. I pulled the Moki and put it in a Hangar 9 1/4 Cap.Hovers 1/2 throttle. My point is,I don't think you'll like it w/BGX,as the moki has more power.I have a G-62 I'm gonna put in,so I'd like to here from all on the subject, because rhis is my first gas motor.(Been flying all kinds of glow for 25yrs.)
Thanks
Erik

I've been flying a TF Giant Corsair with a Moki 2.10 and a Top Flight 20-10 prop for over a year. It weighs 27 lbs and is quite fast. I've been very pleased with this combination.

Thanks for the advice!

Yeah, I was leaning towards the G-62. I want it to be fast, but I also want it to be as realistic as possible. I hear the G-62 sounds pretty darn good! I am going for more scale detailing on this plane than I have done with my other planes in the past. I checked out RCWarbirds.com and some of those planes are quite inspiring, I'm thinking I'll do the Huntress III scheme.

One question, on the real plane and seemingly only on some kits, there is a thing (dont know what else to call it) behind the oil cooler scoop that rotates, what is that?

I think the ZDZ60 would also be an excellent choice. Its light and the carburetor is in the back so it wouldn't have to stick out the side.

Actually, I was just looking at the G-62 and the Moki 2.10 down at the hobby shop. Seems like the G-62 will require quite a bit of cowl cutting. The Moki would really be an clean easy fit, and the overall price for everything needed is easier on the pocketbook too.

Ah delima....

I don't want to try to persuade you one way or the other but it sounds like you want to have a good, scale looking product after you're done.

You have discovered what a G62 will do to the appearance of your cowl so Vic's (fw190) suggestion may work if you are partial to gas. I've seen his plane and the installation is clean for a narrow fuselage due to the rear carb.

I suggested the 2.10 because it has more than enough power to give you the performance that I imagine you will want for a P51 without running it peak lean and it should give you enough room to cool it properly.

I have a Quadra 100 in my quarter scale Mustang and it totally fills up the nose which is making me try to vent cooling through the entire fuselage to prevent excessive holes in the cowl. (Hope it works.)

If you go with the 2.1, be sure to run it in good on the bench. Mine took a while to break in.

Good Luck with your choice

I have a high torque starter, for up to 1.8 size engines.... will this be enough for the Moki?

I've never used a starter on mine. I just draw fuel in until it sounds real squishy with the carb at idle. Then I just flip the spinner backwards by hand. Usually starts on first flip. I use a K&B 1L plug. In answer to your question, I really don't know. I would think if it turns a 1.80 OK then it should work on the 2.10.

Ed,
No disrespect, but unless the Moki 2.1 has ALOT more power thanthe 1.8,I'm not sure it'd work for me.I thought about it,because I,m told the radial mount pattern is the same, and it would basically bolt right in.The problem is,Although it was fast, the 1.8 barely pulled it around a small loop.It had almost no vertical capability, and that was at 22 lbs.I already have a G-62,and I'm not real concerned about keeping it in the cowl,so it makes sense for me.Also,I can't find the plans,so could one of you please post the cg location for me,as I'm obviously going to have to rebalance it.Thank you.
Regards,
Erik

Brian,
A normal 12 volt starter won't turn over my 1.8.I use a Sullivan dynatron with 24 volts to start it.I had the hi-tork starter, and it just wouldn't do it Good luck!!

Ok, call me Mr Fickle, but it's back to the G-62. I found one here online and the guy lives 15 minutes from me. So G-62 it is! I have never been so indecisive about an engine.

L454S,
I am interested in getting that prop extension, if you could give me more information on how to get it I would appreciate it.

Thanks!
Brian
