Of course I have to bring back the Stegall Minnow. Here is my sketch of the profile for what would be version 6 ... Dad had five versions, best we can count.

This would be very similar to the P-51 based planes, so it should be pretty easy to configure properly.

The landing gear would be on the wing at the front. It may even be possible to use the wing bolts to hold the gear on. That would be handy for transport.

Dan,

Thanks for the comments. I've quoted the El Banditio comment in that thread, because it is missing something.

I'm pretty happy with this one, but I'm open any suggestions.

Will you be kitting this plane? I might like to have one. Would like to see a real pic too.

A pic of the real plane?

Yes, I intend to do this plane. We have a couple of prolific designers here (Dan Kane, Duane Gall, Ed Smith, and others) and I wanted to get their comments and the comments of others before I start on it.

Don,

Have you drawn the cross section for 12.5 sq inches yet? I might suggest moving the canopy back to help that situation. It is tough when you decrease the height to 5", I had to make the polecat 5.375 to get 12.5.

Good eyes, Dan.

I calculated it and it comes out to 11.75 ... So, I need to add a little height into it. BTW, the reason I raised the wing a little was so I could establish the bottom shape of the fuselage. The real one doesn't have a NACA 66 on it, so the leading edge and trailing edge were given a lift.

I checked the El Bandito, and it needs some height also ... maybe what it needed was a little more of a waistline.

Thanks a ton ... That's why I love this place.

Since I have to add some height, it would be possible to go to a 1.5" spinner. How do you feel about spinner size?

Don,

Stay with the 1 3/4 spinner. The engine compartment of a Q40 is pretty cramped as it is, making it a chore when fitting the firewall. To blend the fuselage shape in a nice line with an 1 1/2 spinner would just aggravate that situation.

Half of the front end of the fuselage would have to be cut away to get the engine in and out. Then Dan and I could really fight about whether it would have a "cowling" or "platetocovertheenginecompartmentaccesshole"

I am surrounded by "accessholes"

I am not an "accesshole" just ask me!

Ed,

I tried the 1.5" spinner, and it could be done, but I'm going to leave it as is. Doing the 1.5" would require increasing the fuselage height. The real plane has a fairly large spinner, and there's no good reason to make it even less realistic. BTW, I subscribe to the "platetocovertheenginecompartmentaccesshole" club, and plan to use them whenever they make sense. When I saw Big Bruce's El Bandito, I went "Whoa, those are legal?". That's why I questioned the Contest board chairman about it, because I wanted to be sure I could use a platetocovertheenginecompartmentaccesshole.

In my "rest" time, I'm drawing up a GR-7, aka Kazi Killer, and I will use the 1.5" on the Plastic Phantastic because the real one has a small spinner, and the nose is sloped enough to do it.

Dan,

I looked at the cross section again, and my calculations were based on using a 1.25" wide canopy and didn't include the fairings into the canopy. If I go to a 1.5" wide canopy I'll be ok with the current profile. It will be close, but I'll have to do some serious template and CAD work so that every bit is accounted for.

BTW, I'm sure there are people out there who have referred to me as an "accesshole".

Sean,

I'll be documenting the progress when I start on it ... Stay tuned ... It will be after the Electric NATS before I do anything more than tweak drawings ( probably ).

Ed,

You may remember me telling you about a 1/2A Profile Proto plane that caused a real storm at a meet in Winston Salem. This is not the plane, but this one was its predecessor. Even though it's a control line plane, the real Miss Cosmic Wind was fitted with the real Minnow wing. So therefore, this is somewhat on topic.

My dad brought up some boxes of my old junk and I found this amongst it. This was a Miss Cosmic Wind built for 1/2A Proto Speed. It had no pan and was built on a hard ply crutch. It had a removable cowl for access to the tank and monoline button. I think I won a contest with this one because I was the only Junior in 1/2A Proto. It had a homemade monoline torque unit and even a lathe turned mono button. I built it when I was 12 years old.

The real storm came the next year when I showed up with an El Bandito that had a similar engine installation (and a higher aspect ratio wing) for 1/2A Profile Proto. I managed to squeeze the engine compartment down even more. Out of this MAJOR controversy came the "cheek cowl" rule for profiles.
