well, its always good to error on the rich side. But the engine needles fairly well... no need to be afraid of it. The key is finding peak rpm first. That is your reference point. Pinch the feed line if you can (very briefly). My technique is just to turn the needle and when I hear the rpm increase stop, rapidly back out 1/4 to 1/2 of a turn. Typically find peak rpm briefly, then back down 600-700 rpm from there. The 12x6 works ok on the Toni setup. If the engine is still a bit new, run it a time or two with less prop. An 11x7 or 11x8 works well and will let the engine unload easily a time or two. Then try the 12x6 again.
