Is anyone familiar with this plane...., Own one...., know someone that owns one...., or can give me any insight into the quality of the plane? Impressions on servo placement, type, torque rating???

Pictures would be great.

I'm thinking about this combo... with the PHP 51CC

http://www.precisionhobbyproducts.com/extra260.html

Anyone familiar with the PHP 51CC Engine?????

Thanks for the insight.

The price looks attractive, but I find it very hard to believe a airplane with 85 inch wing-span has a wing area of 1636 square inches. My opinion is give him a call and see what he has to say and then do a build/review.

I am meeting the owner of PHP at the Toledo RC Show. If I like what I see I'll be taking home a new plane. And yes, I will do a build/review.

I just didn't think that I would be the first one to do it.......

Has anyone talked to PHP. i would be interested to know what it is covered with as well as see some shots from inside the fuse. The wings look like they have a larger chord than scale so 1600+ may be possible. if this is the case and it builds anywhere close to the advertised weight it could be an impressive plane. I am in the market right now for a 400$ 3d plane to put a DL on.

Well, your in luck my man..... I am picking one of these up on April 4th at the Toledo RC show..... Rick is bringing an extra EXTRA260 for me. When I get it home I will take pictures and post. Sorry you'll have to wait till then.

I did talk to Rick on the phone here about two days ago. I asked him a few questions that were important to ME.... I know that the kit is complete ply and balsa jig build up, the hatch is removeable from the firewall to the rear of the canopy and held in place by 2 quick remove pins, not magnets. Also, it uses 2 servo's per aileron and elevator. Also, he said that this extra was comeing in much lighter then a Wild Hare Extra 300. He also said that they have lengthened the wing tube 2 extra spars on each side to combat wing failure..... That makes me happy..... As far as the covering I can't comment. I know that I can't wait to pick mine up.....

Rick seemed to be a pretty strait up guy.... he was more then friendly, I'm sure he would be happy to talk with you.

Thanks for the info. This plane is a little larger than I would like but the price is definately right. I am not crazy about two servos per aileron. That seems like overkill on a plane this size. Did I misunderstand you and it has 2 servos total, one per elevator half and one per aileron half?

That really is an easy thing to overcome...... Use a larger servo.... like a Bluebird MG630. and put in in the inside most servo spot.... then fill the outside servo placement..

This what I am going to do....

Got off the phone with Rick today. Looks like they are using a combination of Oracover and High grade Chinacoat. All the Purple is Oracover.... all the white is Chinacoat.

I really don't like chinakote. I have had two very nice planes that I really loved, and the chinakote ruined them for me. These were with glow engines however so with gas it may not be as big of an issue. Has anyone confirmed the wing area on this plane? Also does anyone have any real AUW numbers?

I purchased an Extra 260 from Rick at the Toledo show. The plane has a few little things such as alignment of the wing bolts through the rib material to the blind nut and anti-spin pins to the fuselage. So far nothing that a few minutes, a Dremel and a drill can not take care of. I will be building up the engine mount area though. Also, Rick gave me 2-sets of right side decals in stead of 1-right and 1-left. I sent him an email requesting the left side tonight.
The plane has a wing design similar to a Dazzler or Up-Roar, thick, deep and short
I think I will end up with a DA 50 on the nose.

More later.

Looks like your typical budget entry-level gasser to me. The price is right, but it doesn't look like a contest-winning design by any means. The chord is definitely wider and more constant than tapered - not a good setup for snaps, but it will float and harrier well if that's your gig.

KC,

I have one of these kits I have posted a link to the build pictures for you. I have not flown it yet was trying to get it in the air this weekend however I am having a hell of a time getting the 51cc motor to fire.

Its not the best quality in the world however for my first large scale plane it will be a good entry into it. There are some quality issues with the kit, the first thing you will want to replace is the landing gear they are garbage. Made of fiberglass in two seperate pices each one is a different thickness and size and they dont fit that great.
There really isnt a great place to mount the throttle servo either. I went ahead and ran the two servos per aileron however I think it is way over kill for the size plane.

I will be posting more pictures later this evening of the final build if your interested.

he bottom line on the kit and anything else in life you get what you pay for.

Feel free to email with any questions on the plane.
