always wear a helmet! lol i gues syou figured that one out already, but go to any skate shop and get the bmx helmets, all one design, they are simple ones, that just go on top of the head. If youre going to be jumping a lot, you may want to get a full face helmet, like motocross, except thinner, but it will cost a lot more.

They have all kinds of helmets for that sport. I mean it is your personal preference on what you want and what you are doing. I know some people run with full face helmets like dirt bike ones and some just run with the ones that cover your the top of your head. That is what I know from when I was into it years ago. Things may have changed.
Here is one link with both kinds on it http://www.xsportsprotective.com/bmx-helmets.html

if you doind any type of serious jumping. buy the leatte brace. if you land on your head you may have a broken calor bone but not a broken neck. there worth every penny.

those 50 dallor foam ones are crap, i broke my calor bone with one of those

You dont need a leatt brace for beginning bmx. Fell face helmets are nice, but not really needed for freestyle but they dont kill when you hit your head. When you hit your head with a regular helmet it still hurts pretty bad. Full faces have alot more padding.
