With the popularity of the Nitro Predator RQ-1 UAV, which is a brushless pusher prop, some indepth
searching resulted in an unusual and unexpected find. The Global Hawk UAV, powered by an EDF,
is available at www.sonicelectric.com. Chirs Hornby, the noted RC pilot from the UK, and myself
decided that we just had to get the Global Hawk and start this build. We hope that this project
between the US and UK will be entertaining and informative, as well. So, by jove, let's get this
off to a jolly good start!!!!! Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh............Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!

Great. I am only half way through my predator FPV build that I decided to do after I saw your great build up of that... so I will have to plan on getting the Global Hawk now... I can transfer all the electronics over to the global hawk if/when I crash the predator.

Looking forward to it!

I will post pix of my predator on that thread when the avionics come in... seems everything is on back order, but its going to have 900mhz video, co-pilot wing leveler and a Dragon ODS with autopilot return to origin.

Now... how to hide 2 UAVs under the workbench...

Finally, some photos of the basic Global Hawk EDF. Again, www.sonicelectric.com is the link. I was
surprised to see a minimum of parts; two fuselage halves, the canopy, two main wings, two elevons,
fixed wire landing gear with wheels, wing attachment plate, two fiberglass wing tubes, EDF unit with
cover and a small parts bag. The EPS foam was well done and the grey color was already applied.

The plastic wing attachment segment was well thought out and looks like a great idea.

The rear "V" tail (elevons) fit into pre-made openings in the rear of the fuselage and it looks like
it will take a little sanding to perfect the fit. The canopy, actually just a foam piece which is part
of the unusual shaped nose, fits nice and snug and will be easy to remove to install the battery
once at the field. In addition, the equipment bay is large enough to house the electronics with
room to spare for battery movement to set the proper CG.

I plan on using the Himax HB2815 inrunner (275 watts...25A...2000kv...40,000RPM) which should produce
about 140W/lb. which is more than enough power for scale like flight. The cradle for the EDF unit has
already been incorporated into the mold of each fuselage half and the attachment parts are two plastic
rails which fit perfectly in place.

good pics Jeff , my only complaint is that the photo's arnt big enough , RCU should be like RC GROUPS with the piccy's BIGGER

Ian,

You know, I thought that the RCU Forum photos used to be bigger. Maybe I am not uploading
them correctly. I will check this out and let you know.

Chris Hornby, co-contributor of this build from the UK, has stated the following concern about the Global Hawk;
"I was a bit concerned about the fan because the housing tunnel is not clean thru and there would
appear to be plenty of opportunity for turbulence and consequently power loss, but we'll see when
it all goes together." Chris makes a good point regarding his observation of the EDF tunnel. The attached
photos may show this.

Yes, the intake and the exhaust lengths of the actual EDF tunnel are, in fact, very short. Yet, I am
reminded of a Bobcat style airframe that was converted to EDF power and the EDF unit had
no intake or exhaust tubes, at all. It was just attached to the airplane exactly where the pusher
motor had been and the Bobcat flew just fine. Like Chris has said, "We shall see, as our build
progresses."

Hi Jeff,
I am still looking at my GH. Havnt actually started yet, but hope to post some photos this weekend. I am still working on my Stuka and the wing build is way more complicated than I thought and taking lots of time. (air brakes, cannons, speakers, outboard hinges, Wheel boots, 2 piece cantilevered flaps and thats just on the wing!!)
Anyway just thought I would add my 2ps worth just in case you thought I had forgotten!

Stuka???It"s one of my favourite planes.I"ve had a GP Stuka and I loved it so much.Now I"m flirting with the idea of buying a bigger one. http://shop.lindinger.at/product_info.php?cPath=1130_1138&products_id=70389
Flying the Stuka is not difficult at all just take care of the proper subtrim adjustment of the offset ailerons,flaps,divebrakes.Awsome planes.

The Stuka is the one that you were going to install the engine sound system on, right? Greg has had so much
interest and success with his P-51, that he is going to do the sound system to his Corsair. Now, he is building
the new E-flight AT-6 (http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_7188964/tm.htm) for review. Re: the GH, jump in
whenever you have a chance as the EDF intake and exhaust ducting needs your special input. Ohhhhhhhhhh

I dont want to go into too much detail about the stuka for fear of hijacking the thread but yes it is the one Georgee refers to, known as the YT stuka here in the UK and the KMP in the states. I have just about finished it, I have electrified it and included the Benedini soundsystem with engine,guns and siren sound. The kit is nice, but expensive. They have cut corners on most of the hardware so you need to replace a lot which is an added expense. Also you better be good at fibreglassing because the wing joining is a joke. There is no mechanical connection to speak of and the wings are expected to attach with a bit of epoxy and a prayer!

Anyway about my Global Hawk... I have offered up all the bits and pieces and it looks like its going to go together a whole lot quicker than the Stuka and I am looking forward to flying it as soon as the wind drops.

Back from the TOLEDO Show so, in a day or so, it will be down to business with the Global Hawk
build. Check out RCU's coverage of TOLEDO............it's great!

Toledo is a bit far for me, maybe next year? I just got my globalhawk out and I am starting the build. The grandly titled "Construction Manual" is one side of photocopied A4 and iis for the propellor version anyway, so Guess I will be doing it blind. Just trying to work out what the bag of plastic bits is for.

Jeff, I took a look at your wing attachments. If I attach mine there is a 1/2" gap, To make it possible for the wings to meet then some surgery is needed on the foam. Is this the same with yours? Shall I go ahead and use the knife?[sm=confused.gif]
Also the "CF" spars are too long, do you think that the drill should be used so that they travel the whole length of the wing?
There is no way even with surgery and the knife that the fan cover is going to fit. I am going to replace it with a plastic sheet, painted a suitable grey color.
I dont know why the Stuka is there except I put a better tailwheel in it and am thinking of using the old steerable tailwheel arrangement to make a steerable nosewheel for the GH. More news when I have done it.

Good times at Toledo! The RCU guys are a truely dedicated bunch. These guys worked their tails off to bring great coverage of this event. My hat goes off to them as I witnessed this first hand.

I am still flying the Predator and having lots of fun with it. It is one of the larger E aircraft at my field. I am working on a Byron E conversion and in the prosess of producing the adapter for the Byron fan.
