Got a used savage that looked in good shape, was reaffrimed that it was and i believe that it is, but I'm experiencing user error.

Totally discouraged, I cannot get the thing to start. I am a newbie at this and was thinking this would be easy to do. I have a new glow plug that gets hot (i tested..burnt my finger) The roto start works. i tried not to prime for more than a second or two and i saw the fuel get to the engine. Then I figured well maybe i flooded it so i took out glow plug, flipped it over and put the starter through at full throttle a few times. No gas came out.

Put the plug back in..tried to start a again, won't turn over. Tried giving it some throttle while starting, still no luck. I guess I am going to have to go to my LHS and see if they can help, cause i have no clue what else to try.

Any thoughts?

Carb looks to be at about 20-25 past the hour, guy siad he had it tuned for cold weather...here in CA its a bit warmer.

usualy it's not the savage that disappoints but the engine. do you know how much nitro was ran through the engine before you got it?

Seems like not enough fuel is getting to the engine.
Now try this:
1. When your about to run (fuels in the tank electrics are turned on ect.)
2. Disconnect the fuel line that goes from the top of the fuel tank to the exhaust pipe
3. You need to disconnect the exhaust pipe end of the line
4. Blow as hard as you can and watch the fuel travel through the other fuel line to the carburetor
5. When it gets to the tip BLOW some more, about 1-2 seconds more should be enough, insert the glow plug igniter and connect the fuel line you blew in and prepare to start
6. Try to start it by inserting the rotostart and controlling it with one hand and with the other give a little bit of throttle movement.

Hi,
I'm a newb too, i got a brand new savage and i can assure you that sometimes it's a pain in the butt to get it started!!! I don't know enough to tell you right away what your problems are, but i went through lots of these forums, picked up some info here and there, and got it running fine...

Don't get discouraged (can i say that??) ! once you get it started, running and sliding and jumping all over the place, you'll see that it's well worth the trouble

I know that mine starts better if i lean it a bit, and also set the throttle trim a bit high ( i don't know if it's the proper way to do it, but it helps ) it also throws a lot of mud around when the wheels spin in the air !!!

Hope you'll figure it out!
Good luck, and don't hesitate to ask, there are some great guys who know their stuff around here!!

Next time you check the plug hold it with a pair of pliers, push it into the glow igniter it will glow read if it is good. Safety first would not want you to hurt your trigger finger for when you get it started.

Get your glow stick charged up and while your at it you might as well charge the roto batt as well, nothing worse than thinking your ready to go only to find out your not. The engine should be set back to factory settings, usually flush with the carb body. From there you can re-tune it for your area.

Once you get it started (just a matter of time) use these videos as a guideline for your tuning.

I dont suggest you go to your LHS because usually they charge a fortune and you dont learn anything from having someone else do it for you. We're here to help you, it might take a little longer but you will get it done yourself, save a few bucks and learn something important about nitro RC's.

1st idea (because same happened to me 2 days ago): you smoked the spur gear!

Take the body off and you'll see a big wheel right next to the engine (no better description, sorry...) if you can turn it easily and the wheels are not moving and it looks ****ty (melted, no more tooth) then you've got it...

do you have a Savage X?

mhm... i must admit i didn't investigate that far when i found out my spur gear was melted...

Check it first, see how it looks... after that it gets beyond my little tiny knowledge on my own truck i would screw around and open every gearbox and tranny case i could find, but through a computer, i can't say... sorry...

good luck!

spur gear looks ok... the gear that shows through the bottom looks beat to all hell, but it looks like it doesn't engage anything.

Fire it up with the body off, give it some revs and see if the engine moves the spur gear. If not, then you have a clutch problem. If your spur gear spins but your driveshafts don't, your problem would be in the trans. If driveshafts spin and wheels don't, you've got diff problems. Check it out and let us know. Do yourself a big favour and DON'T take it to the LHS. We are here to help, for free.

isn't that the brake discs? don't take it wrong, but that's what shows through my savy's bottom... oh no, forget this... i just double checked... you can also see the clutch bell through there and it's supposed to mesh with the spur gear... that could be it...

i'm sure Forklift Jeff will be more helpful than me
