Picaboo -> Top of the line gear for a 450? (3/14/2008 3:00:49 AM)

Hello,
I am getting back into the hobby after flying a nitro GPH46 a few years back. It seems electric is all the rage now, and I've found a kit that interests me very much, the Beam E4. 450 size was smaller than I was looking for since I flew a helicopter almost twice its size prior, but it seems this a good size for electrics.

Anyhow, looking at all the different gear is a bit confusing; motor, speed control, battery, charger... Could I get a few recommendations on what is considered to be the high end/top of the line gear for 450 electrics in regards to the motor, speed control, battery, charger, and perhaps even gyro and servos. I currently have a JR XP783 TX that I used with my GPH46.

Btw, my main goal is to achieve long flight times as opposed to peak 3D performance. Would 15 min be possible with a certain setup? Any help would be appreciated, hoping to put in an order tonight! I'm excited :) Thanks.

What you get will depend on some factors but most are flying the following:

Cyclic servos: Hitec HS65MG (there is the digital version of these also available but they would probably use more juice and reduce flight times)
Gyro: Futaba GY401
Tail Servo: Futaba 9257
Motor/ESC: this is the toughest, the align 3700kv motor and 35amp esc are decent and good enough for most. for higher end look at neu or kontronik but then you're talking about $300 to $600 just for the motor/esc.
Batteries: FlightPower or ThunderPower
Charger: ThunderPower TP1010C w/ TP210V balancer

I'm sure your radio would still work but 2.4ghz is all the rage right now, no more frequency conflicts and no need to use a frequency board, plus smaller antenna.

15 min i dont think so. get a 430L motor might getyou closer to 10 with a good lipo though

I think under certain conditions longer flight times are possible. I put the 430L motor with matching align 35 amp esc on a falcon 3d 400, and I get 15 minute flight times with a 2100 mah battery. With electric, things like how the blade pitch curve is set matters a lot to the amount of time that you can fly. You'll probably miss the long flight times that nitro power can deliver, but you simply can't beat the convenience of just plugging in the battery and flying!
