A friend of mine has had two eboards burn out in the same spot- TWO FLIGHTS IN A ROW!!!!!!

We checked all the wireing and there is no problems there. He even put on a brand new tail wire.

The local hobby shop expert is baffled and has offered to look it over for free.

Any help from the pro's here would be appreciated.

I thought I should also add that this happend on 2 different axe cp's. I think its unbeleivable that 2 eboards on seperate heli's would burn out. I asked the local hobby shop if the batteries can cause power surges and he said no.

What else could it possibly be?

Eagerly awaiting some opinions or advice.

Is there any binding in your tail rotor and gears or the main motor gears and head unit? That will cause excessive amperage draw.

Nope no binding at all just instaled a direct drive GWS tail motor and blade setup works with no binding flew like a charm for about 3 min then smoked.

There's your answer, the GWS direct drive is drawing too much power. Try a smaller prop, or go back to the gear drive set up.

Thing is, the first one that burnt out was using a stock tail motor. Then ,Seridium, seeing my blade cp with dd tail, decided to try that on his second axe. We asked the expert at local hobby shop, who happens to be perhaps the best heli pilot in western Canada, if the dd would work on the axe cp and he assured us it would. The GWS dd motor is the same as the generic GWS motor, only difference is no pinion on the dd. This is why the expert at the lhs has offered to look it over for free, he is baffled.

I thought along the lines of a power surge or to much draw, but cannot find any evidence that that should have happend.

Guess we'll just wait for the call from the lhs and see what he says. Should be interesting.

Direct drive pulls a lot more amps than a gear drive, just figure the gear ratio of the stock tail unit, say it's 4:1, that would let the motor do less work to turn the same prop size. Over amping the esc happens in the first few seconds of motor startup when it's stalled and trying to turn, it's called inrush amps. Since the gyro is constantly ramping the motor from high to low, it's causing lot's of power to be pulled through the mixer board which generates heat and eventually kills the unit. My buddy had it happen to him too, except it glitched on the bench and he grabed the rotor to stop it, stalling the rotor head and the motor still trying to turn burned it out faster than he could let go. If you run a gyro on the tail with a little gws 5 amp esc it will solve your issue, same for the main motor, just run a seperate esc for that if you with and do away with the 3-1 board. I'm giving all the componets to do that option to my buddy to see how it does. I'll keep you posted to let you know how it worked.

Well the heli did fly with the direct drive as in flight I smelt the burn so all I can figure is that it is the direct drive causing the problem, but why would my other burn the same way with stock tail motor?

My friend checked the main rotor pitch on his and it had 14 degrees + pitch, way too much pitch(load) on the main motor, this will cause the 3-1 to burn up as well, as far as the tail motor, if the current goes up too much the voltage goes down, causing the amperage to increase. Since the tail motor doesn't use as much current as the main motor, it has no problem getting burned up by the avaliable power on tap. The main motor is looking for more than the battery can supply, hence it survives. Just my thoughts on it, I would check your amp reading, along with your pitch settings.
