We had our first ever Club 40 race here in the Nashville area yesterday. We had five in Novice class and six in Advanced class. Fortunately the weather cooperated just enough for us to get in four rounds in each class. The weather had been forecasted to be bad for Saturday. Friday night we had a big weather front move through the area. I think a number of people made their decision the night before to not attend based on the forecasts. When I got up Saturday morning the sun came up to a cloudless sky. During the race, the weather did deteriorate, but we just finished racing before the rain came. Actually, an hour later we could have raced again for most of the afternoon. Also, there were a number of pilots who had planes but declined to fly their very first race in the windy turbulent conditions. That probably was a good decision on their part. There were no mid-airs or pole-hits. The results: Novice Brian McManus 1st Charles Waterston 2nd Walter Everett 3rd Don Decker 4th Ken Skelton 5th It was obvious during the Novice class racing that these guys had been practicing. There were a number of closely fought heats. There were a few crashes though, but we figure they were wind/turbulence related. In the cases I saw, the planes were banking near 90 degrees and it looked like the wind rolled them over past 90 degrees and thus into the ground. They weren’t very high either. A number of the advanced guys were helping and calling for the novices. You could see the improvement in the novices in just that short a time period. I think it is VERY important that the experienced pilots help, mentor, and encourage the novices. Brian started flying RC in January of this year! In the last heat, Brian and Charles were having a furious race, with Charles inching ahead just at the last. Advanced Doug Bebensee 1st Chris Quinn 2nd Kurt Weems 3rd Greg Doe 4th Glenn Sheppard 5th Glen Batson 6th The advanced class was filled with experienced pylon pilots who, in many cases, have raced in other classes for years. Every heat was a “barn burner”, often with the finish not determined until right at the end. These guys could fly low and tight. It was exciting to watch. The other advanced pilots I talked to told me they had a blast and are looking forward to the next one. Racing is racing! Our next Club 40 races are on July 12 and Aug 23 at the Peeler Park field hosted by the Music City Aviators. Our next Q-400/Warbird/F1 races are on June 7 and June 21 at the Cane Ridge Park field hosted by the Mid Tennessee RC Society. Actually, these two clubs are collaborating in putting on these races. There are helpers from both clubs at each race. This is working out well. Doug Bebensee
