I got a lipo battery for my axe cp and it works really well but my question is this: it rests against the main motor and the motor gets really hot. Is this going to ruin my battery? Is there anything good that I can put between them or is it nothing i should worry about? I have another question...which is probably stupid haha. What does the gyro on the axe actually control? The tail motor?

Thanks

Yes, you should put something inbetween your Lipo & the main motor. I use a piece of double-sided foam tape & a wood mixing stick (wide-popsicle stick). Almost any non-heat conductive material will work as a backer, I've used old pieces of circuit board, thin birch plywood, etc. If the temperature of the Lipo's goes above 120 degrees, that can cause the battery to PUFF or SWELL, and or loose a cell. They DON'T like high temperatures, although they DON'T like cold either, picky little buggers.

The GYRO that comes on a stock AXE CP is a RATE GYRO, it only controls the tail motor. It somewhat holds the tail from spinning due to the main rotor torque (when in a hover), but you will have to compensate for increases/decreases in throttle, or changes in cyclic motion. A rate gyro will not hold the position, so you must learn to fly the tail.
A Heading Hold gyro will LOCK the tail in position, no matter what the throttle position or cyclic is doing, it does make for easier flying as you no longer have to fly the tail, set a heading and forget it.

Ok Ill do that with my motor so my batteries dont overheat.

If the stock gyro is correctly configured can it get pretty close to holding the tail? If I was to tinker with the e-board, which of the settings would I mess with?

I was searching around and came across this http://rcsmart.com/gyroeskyek2.html Would that be a good heading hold gyro? For the price, it sure beats $120 for the Futuba gyro that helimax recommends.

The gyro on the ACP is actually a headingold gyro, albeit not such a great one. You have two settings; gyro 'gain' and 'center'. If you get the two dialed in nicely, the tail will hold dead-on and you can fly it completely hands off for a few seconds at a time. (basically it's the same gyro as a G90, but maybe a tad harder to dial in)

As to a good gyro, the GY401 is ten times better than the GY240, but prohibitive in price if you are not very serious about helis. I'm not sure how well any other gyro would work, but I do know that you will never go wrong with either of those 2, and the G90 will fly almost identically to the stock gyro. A good gyro will make all the difference in the world on your heli, but if you are only using it to learn how to hover and basic forward flight, the stock one will work perfect and any other gyro (other than 240/401) will be a complete waste of $$. Just my $.02

Do yourself a favor and get the Trex 450 'bump resistant' landing gear for your bird. They are waaaaaaay better than the stock ACP L/G's, and they make it feel rock solid! (Only $7-$8 bucks, so what've you got to lose!!!?) You do have to pull the frames open a little on both ends to get them to fit on there and just use the stock screws. The ones that come with the skids probably won't hold as well. Let me know if you have any more questions about fixing up your heli

Thanks for the info. Right now I can set the tail trim on the controller when I first start a flight and the heli will keep the same heading, but over time as the battery drains it will need more trim to keep it on track. If the stock gyro is set right can I keep from having to do this or would i need to upgrade to a better gyro? Also, what is the best way to try to dial in the stock gyro? The book just says what each setting does but does not really explain how to go about setting it.

I think the Axe gyro is a RATE gyro.

Yes a RATE gyro - to adjust, rotate the bottom pot in the direction the heil wants to rotate (from above) - i.e. if it wants to rotate to the right, tweak the bottom pot clockwise )small adjustments) - be aware that you will never get it to hold like a HH gyro!

I just got the courage to take the training gear off and all i have to say is WOW. It flies 1000000 times better. With the training gear it would be hard to keep it in a steady hover and it would just move around. Without the training gear, it is so much easier to keep it in one place!
