I would like to know how to define gas engines size(s).

Lets say a glow 2c is 1.40, the equivalent in glow 4c is 1.60 ( or "one size" up), now what would a gas equivalent in cc be? what is the rule of thumb?

Status: offline 		1.20=20cc, 1.40=23cc, 1.60=26cc. Thats just the displacement though.
A 20cc gaser is like a 90 sized glow, to make 1.6 glow power you are looking at 35-40cc gas

Status: offline 		You would probably need a 1.80 4 stroke to equal the power of a 1.40 2 stroke glow engine in most cases. Guesstimating 2 stroke to gas is about like doing the same with glow radial engines as far as any rule of thumb to start out on.

I'm still a bit fuzzy on converting 4 stroke, gas engines to anything else right now.

Status: offline 		Same engine, same case etc, the glow engine will be about 10% to 15% stronger than the gas engine, if you can get it to run right.
Few manufacturers succeeded in producing glow engines in excess of 1.20 that ran right without special attention. The simplicity of glow ignition takes it's toll there.
Not to say that a 2.40 glow engine will be crap. It just needs some more considering before it is fit to use, as methanol racing engines prove without doubt. That is why the small gassers from 1.60 upward are taking over for the guy like you and me.

Status: offline 		I did a little research on my own & I think a Moki 2.1 would be too much. A 30cc engine equals 1.83 cu. in & an equivalent glow engine of the same displacement is more powerful than a gasser. Additionally, if I'm correct, a two stroke of 1.37 cu. in. would equate to a four stroke in the 1.8 cu. in. range. The question is, do you use a 1.8 four stroke or a 1.8 two stroke to replace a 30cc gasser? I'm at a loss on that question, so any help you might have would be appreciated.

Status: offline 		Thanks for the info. I've got a Super Tiger 2500, Moki 1.8 & a Saito 180 4stroke. I guess any of them would work for a 12 pound airplane.
