At the moment we have winter. It is below zero some days and very wet. Our local field is layed on clay. So we need a lot of sun to get a dry field. Before april 2009 we can not fly any model except indoor models. So you will have to wait a few months. In january I will stop with the business and my website will be gone. You can contact me at: lookbodt@xs4all.nl
At the moment I am building a P-51D with the same set up as the Strega for flying on my local field. The model will get a fast airfoil and a side exhaust can be used like the new OS 55AX. I will show pictures when the model has flown.
Happy Christmas !!
Look.

Why not set it up for the latest webra .55 ?

I only will make small orders. The Webra 55 will also fit. The spinner is 3 inch, so the nose can handle even a 91 engine.
I prefer a 60 wankel but I think this engine is not available.

Strega Update

The plane and molds have survived the shipment across the pond and now reside in NorCal.
I've got a few flights in on the prototype, and while the speed is impressive the slow flight characteristics are really great.

Look really did his homework on airfoil selection. In fact, every aspect of Look's work from initial design, layout, fabrication and prototyping on this plane is incredible.

It has taken substantially longer to ramp up and pull the first fuse, but with Look's coaching and teaching it was a sucess.

Some photos below.

Pulling fuses are like making cookies - I get to keep all the slightly burnt ones

Rob, you make it look easy! I guess the skill of doing the lay up is getting the pieces pre cut to the best working shapes and keeping straight in your head how the layering is progressing, not leaving any weak spots. What speed of hardener do you use?
It looks like you're pretty well set for racer planes from now on, this beauty will never go out of style.

CP, The actual layup process is just best carried out with a methodical approach - very similar as pouring concrete.
Pour it out wet - fill the forms - tamp/vibrate down- tool it till just before green - guard until set

I am using a slow hardener for the mold layup, trim molds when green, and a faster hardener for mold joining.

This seems to be working and keeps the molds in a shorter turnaround.

On the first two pulls I layed a bundle of 4 tows of 6k carbon roving along the wing saddle/cutout extending well fore and aft of the opening.
I layed 2 tows of 6k roving along the mounting lip of the bottom/belley cowl/fairing.

3 layers of 3.1 oz 4H crowsfoot cloth with the middle ply on the bias.

This has produced a very stiff and light fuse.

I may put a ply of light kevlar in a belly pan for a belly lander or for when the retracts won't.........

What I am finding a bit shocking and I can imagine you experienced guys nodding knowingly is, The amount of time and effort involved in getting a marketable kit.

Terry,
Thanks for the encouragement - just tell me what size wings to cut for a .91

Filling pinholes......

Rob, They must be pretty darn light, I'll take note of the 3X3 layering and placement of the carbon rovings.

Getting a "system down" will help a bit, but we know it's a lot of work, we take our hats off to you sir!

RocketRob,

Did I understand this correctly, Look send you his molds?

They are of very high quality, the best I have seen so far.
Until I moved to a new house 2 months ago, I was a neighbor of Look, he lived just 20m away (now 470km unfortunately).
I was over at his place pretty often during the time he made the Strega molds and the first glass fuselages.
In fact, of the few kits he made I bought one :-)

It was pretty cool seeing "the master" at work.

I haven't started building mine, but already bought an engine, but I am in doubt if it can be modified.
It is an OS .46 VX-DF, I also bought a Hatori tuned pipe.
The problem is the crankshaft is too short for a prop, I have a modified nut that would allow me to fit a prop, but am not sure if it is strong enough.
Anyone have any experience modding ducted fan engines for props?

Danny

You will need a “short shaft adaptor”
Tru Turn part number TT-0141-A) is what you’ll need. Ream out the CARBON prop to fit the short shaft adapter. Turn the prop and hold the prop ream tool stationary for best hole concentricity than balance. Start reaming from the engine side of the prop. Take your time.
http://www.truturn.com/product_line.html Enter the part number in their search window.

You may need a header to tune that pipe so you can run the carbon props that it needs.

Thank you very much freakingfast.
Turns out, I have the exact same Tru Turn parts.
I turned one down on my lathe so a prop would fit.

Thanks for the links, now I have no more worries the VX-DF will turn a prop.

At first I thought that the engine in post 509 & 510 was an old 46 df, but now I think its a 91 DF engine....Your an animal Rob!

Well, I guess you need to find Vne if your going to put these out.

My next kit (not a prop job..) is one of Look's designs as well, the molds are all here and sitting in the production cue. His mold work is top-notch indeed.

Rob and I were actually both wooing Look about the Strega molds at the same time. Ya snooze ya lose..

I have the perfect engine for one of those.

I just saw this thread has updates, I thought it was dead. I guess I was wrong. Please put me on the waiting list for one of these babies, I was on a list when Look started. Just PM me with all info needed.

Thanks Bruce

This is a really nice looking kit, As an 10 + year electric Jet guy, that has been doing glow to edf conversions for awile. so I have plenty of os/91 that need a home I think I just found a home for a couple of them.
