Hi All-

I realized that the wheels I originally bought for my PT-40 were actually the wheels they say to use for the PT-20, and were thus too small. I went to the store and bought these Dubro Super-lite wheels http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXAZE3&P=7

The instructions call for rubber treaded wheels, but I'm wondering if it is OK to use the super-lite wheels or are they too delicate for this plane? Especially since I am a newb and will probably have a lot of hard landings.

On the other hand, I'm not expecting all the landings I make to actually be on the wheels so maybe they will be OK

James

The wheels material is okay. The problem is the size. If you will be flying on grass, then a larger wheel is needed. 2.75" is very common. If you are flying from asphalt, then size is not of concern. If the material is too soft, then you might see the effect if flying on asphalt.

Don't be concern about those wheels and start flying.

James- If you are thinking that a lot of your landings are going to be rough, or "not on the wheels" I think maybe you're not quite ready for a P40. I'd suggest a little more time on a low wing sport or some like that before you tangle with the P40. They are not that bad once airborne, however, they can be a real handfull taking off & landing. If you belong to a local club, you will be way ahead to get with one of the club's better pilots that fly War Birds to give you the "heads-up" on how to fly them.. Good Luck

outdoorhunting,

The title stated the PT 40 not a P40. The PT 40 is a Great Planes trainer. Sounds like JamesDL is doing the right thing.

Not sure if you have built the plane yet but if you do go with the sport wing. It will still be fine for a first plane. It is the plane I used to start with and it did a great job (I did not do the sport wing ). Also the wheels you got will work just fine.

Thanks! The plane is the Great Planes Trainer. I'm building it with the sport wing. I've also had some experience flying small foam backyard flyers and been training on the G3.5 simulator.

The wheels I bought are now the size that Great Planes recommends in the instructions. The wheels I had originally were the PT-20 size wheels. I must have been looking at the wrong list of parts in the manual when I ordered them...

The plane is almost ready to go, just have to install the radio gear and fuel tank, and cover the wing and ailerons.

I have two of these planes, one I converted into a tail dragger for fun. The biggest problem I had with the plane was using the recommended wheel sizes, flying from grass I had too many prop strikes, went to bigger wheels - no problem.

Great little plane you will enjoy it.
