I got a nib Cox Conquest .15 as a gift from a friend, but would like the instructions for the engine, as these were not included, and specifically instructions regarding fuel and prop sizes. Also is there any place I can get extra plugs for this engine. I would like to use this engine in a QM 15 model like the Matney Models Rivets.

Do you have the FF/Speed engine with the glow button type head?

Cox also had a standard finned head for a regular plug.

When K&B took over the Cox Conquest production under their name they came up with a special Q/M version of the engine with a different cylinder liner and a choice of an oversized Perry carb or straight venturi that used the glo-button head. It looked like the FF/speed engine but had a regular prop nut instead of the aluminum spinner.

Many Cox Conquest engines were updated to ABC cylinder liners and special heads by Ron Young. These were pretty hot engines. The cylinder fins were also shaved a bit.

While we're on the subject, does anyone have a .240 ID venturi, exhaust adapter, and mini-pipe for a Conquest .15? I haven't been able to find these parts to resurrect one that I have. I have the spraybar / needle assembly, but not the rest of the parts. I picked up a reasonably priced RC version a while back and would like to switch it over. It's not really "collector" grade, the rear mounting holes are enlarged a bit, so I want to run it in an old Gager P63 or Gall Stinger this summer.

Fizz,

A while back MECOA had the K&B Conquest .15 and parts on their site. I was in there this morning and didn't see any reference to the Conquest.

You might drop Randy an email and see if he still has some parts or what happened to them.

Let me check my stash of cox parts. I have one good one, and one thats been robbed of parts. I believe I have an extra venturi (not sure on the size) and also the straight mini pipe. Also have one of those baby semi muffled pipes, pretty funny looking actually.

Forgot to mention I'm pretty sure a Rossi or Nelson exhaust adaptor also fits the Cox. Can't remember which one, probably the Rossi.

I know I had bought a muffler and a carb from RJL Mecoa a while back. The muffler is kinda neat, it looks like your standard side exhaust muffler but attaches to the rear of the motor. When I had bought the muffler and carb, the price for those two items was about the same cost of a new motor, but I couldn't find one at that time.

It's the FF/UC version without carb. It has the glow button and spinner. I would also like to get the pipe.
Any info on props and fuel ?

Thanks for the replies, guys. I've checked MECOA, and they didn't have the exhaust adapter - it said "in process". The venturi I think they did have, and they listed a "header tube" which might be the same, if not similar to the mini pipe. It might be worth a phone call, eh?

I keep kicking myself, because I used to race with a stock conquest quarter midget version I had, and for the life of me I can't find that engine or the parts for it. I don't know what happened to it! I still have the Nelson .15, but there are some guys in the area that are building a couple of QM planes with conquest .15's, so I thought I would run the same engine and go have some fun!

Heck, I even found a few carbon fiber props when I was looking for the old engine. I'm running out of places to look, though, so I don't know if I'll ever find the engine or not.

I used mine for .15 sized combat up here a few years ago, and they worked great. Except that every other midair broke something on the motor. Sure spun those 8x3 combat props up :)

When MECOA says not in stock that's code for never will be. I have a cox conquest and a K&B conquest. Great in combat planes.

I bought 2 of these from MECOA way back and they are awesome little engines. You might have a hard time finding glow plugs for the FF head. Maybe Ebay.
I always liked a 7-5 on mine but I was sport flying. It would turn that prop close to 20,000. One thing if you want a pipe, you might use a mousse can. Finding the header might be tough.
I recommend calling MECOA and see if they might have some parts.
I always used 15% fuel with good oil (castor).

Funny thing that MECOA has been brought up.... over a year ago I had called them about the 15 motor and they had none in stock, they just called me on Wednesday to tell me that they had my order ready .... go figure ... That is the best service. Needless to say, I did not buy one.

For QM, you want to prop them about 23,000 on the ground with the mini-pipe and 15% fuel. Much over that and they start to have rod problems, I've heard.

Take a 7-5 and trim the diameter a little to hit that. I have a few 7-5N top flight props that I'll probably experiment with.

The Nelson .15 we used to prop for about 27,000 to 27,500 on the ground, and ended up with carbon fiber props because the blades could be thinner and still strong.

Thanks for all the replies, guys. I'm getting a Rivets and a Napier as soon as I get an answer from Matney models. I e-mailed them, but no answer as yet, just confirmation that they got my e-mail. I'll probably get an answer soon, though, I hear he's pretty serious. Boy I'd like to find me one of those Nelson .15's.

The Nelsons are on ebay all of the time. You could probably still buy a new one from him thogh as well. Be patient with Matney but his kits are very nice.

The Nelson 15 pipe adapter fits the conquest as well as the pipe. Towards the end of QM15 the pipe diameter got large for the Nelson's but early ones were very close to the cox and Rossi pipes. The Rossi pipe adapter was actually part of the case. I would say if you are looking to run the engine try to get some nelson parts. As far as plugs go, you may also ask if anyone has a button head for K&B or Nelson Plugs. I don't know of any source for the old button plugs.

A dumb question: does this engine need the mini pipe to run, or will it run well without the pipe, as I remember in those days many engines ran without pipes or silencers.

I always ran my Conquest with an open exhaust. It is very loud but I did not care at the time. I was getting that 20,000 number then. I think a pipe might help though.

Fizzwater,

Dug through my stash of motor stuff and came up with two complete Cox .15's but no extra parts. I am sure I had an extra straight pipe and at least one extra venturi, but I can't find it anywhere and I don't remember having two complete motors?? Must be getting old.

The one of the left has a muffled exhaust with functioning carb. The one on the right uses crankcase pressure, a venturi, and that baby muffler. I am really not sure where this motor came from, looks practically brand new. I must have had a third at some time, because I know I had a case without venturi, needle, and muffler..

if i had a NIB one i would keep it and never use it since they dont make them anymore. do some research on OS.15 and magnum .15's. with some retiming and carb mods you can have these engines turning 21,000-21,500 with mufller on stock APC 7X5 props. we have one at our club that is in a house of balsa F-190 weighs 29 ounces and out runs my LR1 with OS 25fx. My LR1 does 134-136 in a 7 knot head wind. these OS magnum engines are much lighter and pull more rpm so just save that one. If you would like i could get you some timing numbers for ya. we had one os .15 turn 27,000 on a apc 5.25x6.25 electic prop.
