Hey Guys,
Thanks for all the advise, but i just gave up I want to run again! I had a feeling that when I took the head off it was not going to run again. I got the KM 29CC with the 8000RPM clutch and had the Clone DDM pipe. I'm back in the game and only out $100!! maybe a little more because i tried to save the old engine. The new engine is in a purring like a YZ80 dirtbike.. sounds insane!!!

Thanks again guys I may try to get the old one running again one day but for now i will just have a blast!

Awesome man, it's good to be up and running with these buggies!

I have always read that the HPI SS diff is good, and all you need for stepped up horse power. I hope that is true. I recently got an SS diff in the package. I assembled it and all went properly and it looked good and is working good. I replaced the KM diff, not because anything went wrong, but because I just wanted to do an upgrade. While replacing the diff, I also changed out the KM gears in the transmission for the HPI Heavy duty ones, and I might add expensive gears, just so I could believe the transmission was as good as I could get it. So far, so good. BUT, I also purchased a pair of HPI heavy duty (chrome) dog bones at the same time. They are thinner than the standard KM bones, and one of the HPI bones was bent right out of the package. That happened to me once before with a Savage SS kit, one dog bone bent inside the package.

I was dissappointed with the HPI heavy duty bones, so ordered a set of Phatdad crossover bones. These are totally extreme when it comes to size, quality and apparent strength. I am so happy with these.

My whole point is, the mighty HPI does not always make the best part (dogbone) and eventhough I have no reason to doubt the HPI SS diff, I am keepilng my fingers crossed that it is actually better than the KM one.

Thanks, that gives me reassurrance. I can say, with the new diff, trans gears and dog bones, the Baja really works good. At the same time I also put on rpm a arms, front and back. I may just be wishful thinking, but it sure seems to handle better and seems more efficient and running more freely. So far since these upgrades, I have just driven it in the street. Actually with the Hostile slicks, the street is my favorite.

My KM baja is supposed to show up today, and I have a TS Reed engine that I am building for it.

I'm ordering a set of upgrades for the driveline this week (HPI SS Diff a must of course), and I am looking at the Turtle Racing Clutch system. Does anyone here have any experience with it? Is it worth the $200? Is it a must have upgrade when running a more powerful engine?

I got extremely lucky with the TS reed case, my brother bought a used baja that came with a huge amount of spare parts and unused engine upgrades and such, the reed case was brand new in box as part of that deal. He is already running a 30.5cc motor in his and can barely control it as is, so he offered me the TS reed case to put in my KM baja.

Thanks in advance for any replies!

when i first got my km baja it ran great, i ran it mostly on road and on grass,

then one day i took it with me for a trip to the beach i was having a blast for about half an hour run time

then the sand got too much for the open clutch to cope with and the clutch bell got so hot while it

was running that it melted the plastic clutch carrier and destroyed the plastic spur gear,

when i set out to get the baja beach ready i didn`t want to spend a heap of money so i went with the tgn enclosed clutch carrier for $68.00 along with the turtle racing gear plate for $45.00,

to replace the melted spur i got a hostile hobbies heat resistant composite spur gear @ $9.95,

and also a new long lasting cy clutch with 8000rpm clutch spring fitted for $20

i have been running this setup on my km for about 3 gallons now,

all parts are holding up great and it didn`t cost as much as the complete tr setup.

Thanks!

I busted up the pullstart today bashing but I have a spare...

I am really glad I got the KM because I am sure the money I have spent on upgrades is probably the same if I had bought the HPI version.  They are all made in China(probably down the street from each other) and yes, there are some differences in the QC for some parts but I really don't see why they don't open up the HPI Baja bashes to competition. if they really they think their product is exclusively superior, they need to stand behind their supposed R&D and letting the clones into the races.

I am quite sure that is not true. I believe they are afraid that the differences are so small, the competition would be too great, and they would feel cheated for paying twice as much.

Mine now has so many aftermarket parts that it is no longer a KM, but not a HPI either. More of a scratch built from mostly aftermarket parts with a fill in of KM and HPI parts. None of the running gear from KM is left. In all fairness I must say I changed out the parts to have the aftermarket ones mostly for the fun of it, not because any of the KM parts failed.

I feel the same way. Organized racing for the 1/5  scales should be the same as 1/10 or 1/8. You have 2WD stock and modified, 4WD stock and modified. No "brand only". You would then have an opportunity to see cars from many different manufacturers up close and personal. I used to race 1/10 2WD electric modified and never seen or heard of anyone run one specific brand and thats it. Same thing with racing boats. You can't run just one brand and that's it. It's friggin rediculous!!!

Who would feel cheated...HPI or the folks who bash clones?

Ditto on that!...in fact if it weren't for this particular thread, I would have probably not known what to be prepared for versus getting a HPI version and being pissed that I spent that kind of money and still would have to make important upgrades...

I am not interested in getting into the "clone war" but the exclusion of any brand except HPI at Baja events, seems to be driven by the aftermarket companies that usually put on the event or sponsor it. I believe the exclusion is to protect themselves and their high prices so their businesses do not face what they see as unfair competition by the clone makers and sellers. From their viewpoint, I don't blame them, but, I think their fear is not necessary. If their parts are in fact superior and not gouging in prices, then the people wanting or needing this quality will pay it. Others, who want or need lower prices will not.

But, it really does not matter, if they put on an event and want to limit it to one brand, that is their business and right. The tracks that are open for business and putting on legitimate racing events, will never limit their business to one brand. I notice a major seller of parts and engines for baja's also sell other brand stuff and scooter stuff. In fact they sell stuff made by vertigo and one of the major HPI web sites for baja's don't even allow the mention of the word vertigo.

So, business is business, and positions and actions are usually taken to maxamize profits, at least in their opinions.

For me, I have absolutely no brand loyality. I look for what suits me, what works and what is available. It can be from any brand. Stuff from enemies of our country would be a different matter, but right now that is not an issue for these fun cars.

Got my baja in late last night, thanks Heat Hobby for fast shipping.

I have to say that the stock radio that comes with the KM is an absolute piece of crap. Worst radio I have ever experienced.

Running the car today, I lost control of it a couple times for only a second or two...the servos would be unresponsive for a couple seconds at a time. I thought I had a runaway at one point today...scared the bejeezus out of me, throttle stuck at full for several seconds.

I ordered a failsafe last night from DDM. This weekend I am going to pick up the three channel Airtronics 2.4 ghz sport radio from my local hobby shop. $100 not bad.

Still waiting for my dominator pipe and silencer to show up. I hope it shows up by the time I have my TS Reed engine built and ready to install.

Anyone looking to pick a KM up, please replace the stock radio ASAP and put a failsafe in.

It's dangerous to yourself, people around you and the car itself.

Yeah, a good quality radio is absolutely essential in this hobby - especially when it comes to large scale vehicles, people can get hurt or killed.

HELP! Please

and yeah I know some of you HPI guys will say I shoulda sprung the extra $ for the HPI......sorry fellas, but old retired guy here is on a fixed income!

The KM Baja arrived yesterday. It was working great and I was using it for maybe 10 minutes and GENTLY hit my deck with the front tire. Stripped the gear on the steering servo. The Futaba S 3306 servo I just bought locally does not seem to fit since it has square sides but the servo bracket on the buggy is rounded like the stock servo. Suggestions Please!

Also where is the best place to buy HPI buggy parts, not upgrades mind you, just regular parts..........I did find Dave's Discount motors, They have a battery box set which I think will solve my problem IF IT WILL FIT the KM. Anyone know if it does? Daves Discount Motors
