I am trying to decide which Sig J3 cub kit to get. I hear the 1/6 is a real doozie to build and takes some time, and that the 1/5 is more precut and easy. It seems like a pretty big margin on price though. $70 for the 1/6 versus $160 for the 1/5. Is the smaller one really that hard to build? I've had a few kits before, and I am proficient with the concepts of kit building. One more thing to factor in is my OS .40 LA engine. Will this power the 1/5 scale? If not that is a deal breaker right there.

Thanks for any opinions.

The 1/5 is a more modern kit and flys so much better than the 1/6. and I fly mine with a Mag 52 fs, does every thing I ask of it Love the 2 peice wing and how fast it went together 3day then cover.

All things considered, you could build two 1/5 scale Sig Cubs in the time it will take you to build ONE 1/6th scale kit

Can anybody shed some light about the engine though?

coasters,
The 1/5 scale is one of the BEST kits I've ever built. It's laser cut, wood quality is excellent, instructions are great. It's more scale than the 1/6 and can be built either standard or clipped wing version.
For an engine, I'd reccommend a 4-stroke .50-.70 size. The one I built has a Magnum..70 4stroke and the guy who bought it (it was built for a fundraiser) says the .70 is MORE than enough power, so maybe a .52 would be a better choice. I think that if I built the clipped wing version I'd stick with the .70 though.
One word of advice if you build this one. Make sure you run the cables for the pull-pull rudder BEFORE you cover it. The instructions say otherwise, but running the cables with the fuse covered was a B*&^H and a half! Good luck and have fun.

Thanks for the advice. I do already have an OS 40 engine though, That is the engine I'm buying the kit for. So I'm not sure if it will fly with that, or if it's safer to shoot for the 1/6 because i'll have enough power. A middle sized option would be the Great Planes kit too...

I bet you would love the plane with a 4st just for the sound. And the pull pull cables are some thing else if you do the elevator the same. Well to me this CUB is a blast

But if you are like me fly it with what you have untill you can get what you dream about .

What sort of OS 40? Regardless, I bet your OS 40 would fly the 1/5 scale in a scale fashion if you are reasonably careful about weight. That's if you want it to fly it like a 65 hp Cub and not like a sport model. Jim

I think a scale fashion is fine. It is an O.S LA 40 like I said in the first post. It looks like everyone says the 1/5 scale. I need to save up a bit more money.

I have the 1/6 kit still in the box, but have built the 1/4 scale version already.

Of course it depends on your experience and skills, but I must say I've read the 1/6 is a "challenge" to build and personally I have no idea why this is said.
It's a "stick" type of construction, if you like it, and have a good mitre sander too, you might actually enjoy it. I'm sure I will, as much as I've enjoyed the larger one.
the 40 would be certainly enough for the 1/6.

The 1/6 seems to follow scale construction more closely, but the 1/5 is certainly more modern and probably easier and quicker to build.
As mentioned, I have the 1/4 and the 1/6, and probably will not buy the 1/5, I guess it summarises my opinion.

I would really appreciate it if somebody could answer a few questions for me, who has either kit.

I would like info for both planes, 1/5 and 1/6-
-Does it have the aileron servos mounted inside the wing with hatches so just the arm comes out?
-What tail wheel assembly method does it come with?
-What comes with the landing gear as far as scale looks?

Also, does anybody have any pictures of the 1/6 to offer? Ive seen plenty of the 1/5.

The 1/6 Cub is the first plane I ever tried to build myself, back when I was in high school. That was a mistake, and I never finished it. The main challenge is that the fuselage is constructed entirely of 1/4" balsa, that you cut to length and put together yourself. In other words, you build each side by cutting all the pieces to length and gluing them together over the plan, then you put the sides together with more balsa sticks that you make. The wing is not tremendously tricky. I didn't get to the point where I was actually putting everything together. I got part of the fuse build and stalled out.

I don't remember exactly what was provided for landing gear. I'm sure it was music wire that would have to be soldered together. I don't know if it was pre-formed. The ailerons were operated by a bellcrank system, although you could easily modify it for dual aileron servos. For a cowl, it came with a 2 piece thick plastic cowl. It was pretty nice for the times, but if you wanted a dummy engine, you had to fabricate that yourself.

As far as engine, I don't really know because I didn't finish it. A friend had one at the time (1980s) that he flew with a Saito .45 four-stroke. The .40 LA would be on the upper end of power for the 1/6, because it is really a light design. I'm not sure how it would do on the 1/5.

I bought the 1/6 scale cub kit a few years back and finally started building it last June. To put it in perspective, I glued the first pieces together the day we brought my baby daughter home from the hospital. She is now nine months old and I have ONE wing panel done. I have built roughly a dozen kits in the past 5 years, and this is the first one taking me this long to build. I mentioned the baby because that is obviously a contributing factor to my slow progress, but still, this is a very time-consuming kit to build. It was originally designed in the 1950s when computers were the size of a warehouse and people were accustomed to fabricating things and working on their own cars . It is die-cut(crushed) meaning parts have to be carefully cut and sanded before fitting together, the instructions and diagrams are vague by today's standards, and a lot of cutting and sanding is involved. It is not terribly difficult, but it does require more patience, diligence, and creative thought than modern kits. Since I'm lacking in those three areas, I'd probably go back and buy the 1/5th scale kit if I could do it over again.

My 1/5 Scale Sig Cub in the "bones".

Fun kit!

I would like info for both planes, 1/5 and 1/6-
-Does it have the aileron servos mounted inside the wing with hatches so just the arm comes out?
Servos are mounted on hatches with just the arm sticking out.

-What tail wheel assembly method does it come with?
Tail wheel is a scale like leaf spring

-What comes with the landing gear as far as scale looks?
Wire gear, substituted Robart Cub Gear with minimal modifications.

Well clearly the 1/5 has won out. Thanks for all the advice.
