I decided to build another Mini-Debonair wing for my last SPAD which didn't work so well. Since my mini-Deb was the best flying SPAD I ever built, I decided to document the wing build. There is nothing inventive here - it is almost exactly like the full size Deb wing, but it's smaller, and all of the dimensions change a bit. I started out by cutting out the ailerons and glueing up the yardsticks. The ailerons are 22" long. They are 5 flutes wide at the narrow end and 13 flutes wide at the fat end. The spar is made of two, 26" long yarstick pieces, with 3" of dihedral.

The next step is getting the right wing panel ready. It is an 18" x 24" piece of 2mm coro (18" flutes). This is a stock size at Harbor Sales. The spar line is 5 1/2" ahead of the trailing edge, and the fold line is 9" ahead of the trailing edge. I creased the LE fold, glued on the aileron (flame both surfaces first). And don't forget the little 2" x 3/4" filler piece.

The next step is to glue down the spar, and then fold over the top. You need to figure out where the spar is going to fall on the top surface, and flame the surface, the trailing edge, and the top of the aileron. Then you just repeat with the left wing panel. Glue down the aileron & spacer, crease the LE fold, and glue. You need to trim the center a bit to make sure it clears when you fold it.

I cut a 4" wide x 24" long piece of 4mm for the center wing wrap (4" flutes). I put 3 creases at the leading edge to get it to wrap, and I also scored the ceter line to get it to bend a bit to match the dihedral. I glued the bottom first. The I flipped the wing, folded the wrap back to determine how long it needed to be, than I trimmed it and glued it down.

The final step was to hinge the ailerons. I just run a razor blade down one side of a flute, and up the other side. If you angle the blade and use the flute edge as a guide, it's pretty easy to cut a straight hinge. That's it. You need to install a servo, horns, and pushrods, but that's the same procedure for any plane. Like I said, there's nothing inventive here. I mostly wanted to share the dimensional information, in case somebody wants to build a mini-Deb. The rest of the build goes just like the real Debonair, except the fuse is 36" long, and the tail surfaces are reduced by about 2" from the Deb design. Good luck.

And it can't be a mclina plane without a ridiculous amount of stickers.... I decided to do a polka dot scheme, so I cut some circles out of Monocote trim using a plastic cup and butter tub as templates. Then I got an idea....

The circles reminded me of Twister, so I dug out the kids' game from the basement, traced the logo onto white paper, then rubbed it onto the back of some leftover trim. Cutting out the letters was a pain, especially the "W".

Here's the finished wing. A pretty good 2 hour's work. I know that these are not official "Twister" colors, but "Wonder Bread" just seemed stupid. It'll be at least a week before I can put the rest of the plane back together for flight. I am shooting to get it ready for a fun fly on the 30th.

Looks like You have wing building down [;)] Great set of build pics. Great trim scheme. The only thing I do different is dual aileron servos, so I can mix in flapperons and spoilerons + better aileron response which isn't necessary in a trainer. Can't wait to see the finished Mini Deb #2 Jeff[8D]

I only built one plane with dual wing servos. I programmed it for flaperons, but I never got up the nerve to use them. For a trainer of this size, I doubt it would do a lot of good. I added some polka dots to the rear stabs and mounted the wing. All I need to do is replace the engine mount I busted and re-mount the engine.

Pretty Cool! Could you post the airframe weight only, before everything is installed, unless you have already installed your equipment? Might be a cool Spad to electrify![:D] Oops....just noticed the last pictures....Never mind. Later, Omaha
