Several years back, in on of the magazines, RCM or MAN, I read an artical where someone was in the process of building a P-51.
If I recall right it was about 38 to 45% Big. Exact scale ALL aluminum alu. ribs alu. spars alu.wing sheeting panels, all built to the same specs as the full scale plane. Plane was pretty much ready except for the power. The guy was messing around with an array of 4 strokes
4 or 6 I think. I don't remember the sizes, linked to shaft Via cogged pulleys and belts. Had a problem throwing belts.
There was going to be another update on the maiden voyage. Never have heard anything since. Does anyone recall this or have anymore info? Did it fly? did it die? Is it a hanger queen?

It became a scandal and, so far as I've seen, was never completed or flown.

The folks at MAN were backing the project from what I have heard and they pulled their financing when the developer failed to produce a working example. Rich Uravitch may chime in on this also since he was reporting on it at the time.

from what I can remember I thought it was pretty much ready to go except for the engines set up.

If I remember correctly, the plane was to be purchased in sections. You sent some money and got a wing kit, you sent some more money later and got something else, only the "something else" never materialized. One fellow in my neck of the woods got a wing and nothing more.

I don't believe so. The mustang
we were talking about was powered by 6(if I remember correctly) OS 120's. My memory is not so good anymore, but I think this project was in the 90's maybe even in the late 80's.

mustang11 -> RE: P-51 mustang "all aluminum" (4/14/2008 7:03:36 PM)

If memory serves it was the mid-80''s and the guy skipped with many thousands of dollars from fellow modellers, not too much got delivered possibly flap kits and parts for the tail. I also remember the 4 (6?) OS 120 4-strokes for power, guess the belt drive didn''t hold up to the power delivered. I thought the article was in RCM but hey it''s been 20+ years.

Mustang11 you are absolutely correct...I know because I was one of the modellers who was scammed. I sent a large deposit for one of the kits and received nothing but photos and some aluminum samples. The guy left with deposits totalling in the thousands and last I heard he was out of the country...can not confirm this. I did receive many letters from the US Postal Service as they were performing a mail fraud inquiry. That is as much as I know. I am more than happy with my 1/4 scale Cactus P-51 Mustang........
