Hi guys, new to helis and have a twister 3d storm. Have set up all the servos but now not sure how to check if the ESC is going to behave as i'd expect (i.e. should the channel be normal or reversed?). The manual of the heli (can't find any documentation for the ESC itself) has it reversed for a futaba 9CAP - i've got a 6EX. If i were to scope the signal line to the motor would i see an increasing frequency as the revs increase? Or should i just start it, hold on and hope for the best that i've set it correctly!?

Sorry if there's an obvious answer but i've have done a fair bit of searching and not found much.

Cheers.
Dave

Futaba radios need the throttle channel reversed.

The way to tell is put the stick to full throttle. It will either arm and increase the rpm as you lower the stick (this should be obvious and controllable) or go into programming mode. It should go into programming mode, if it arms it needs reversed, either way it wont hurt anything.

A little late now but it's a good idea to take the blades off till you get things working right. Found out the hard way.

Hi guys,

"or go into programming mode" - is that what ESC's do if they receive a full throttle request on powerup? I was in my local model shop and was asking the guy there how he'd set his twister up so he said he'd show me. He'd reversed the throttle on his handset by mistake and it started and spun up to full revs causing some damage to himself and his shop! He might have connected the motor after connecting the power though. Want to avoid making the same mistake too!

I'd thought about taking the blades off or clamping my heli to a bench for first startup. I thought it was bad to rev heli's without their blades though? Can you safely (to yourself!) stall the blades from stationary if the ESC decides to ramp the motor up?

Cheers guys.
Dave

A simple way to avoid that problem is to loosen the motor and back the pinion off the main gear. Then, if the motor spins, you don't have anything to worry about. Figure it out and then reset the gear mesh and you should be good.

Like BH said, put the stick to full. It will either arm or go into programming mode. From that point, don't slam the throttle stick to the bottom unless you are sure it is in programming mode, if it has armed it will spin. If you move it slowly, you will be able to tell if the thing is going to spin and then you know you must reverse the channel. Read your esc instructions and make notes of what the difference in tones between a normal arming and entering the programming mode sounds like, that should help you feel more comfortable about what to expect.
