Well, my tenergy (cheap cell brand) battery just vented. Lots of smoke. Sizzling. 5 minutes after the smoke stopped, the temp was at 301 degrees F. This pic was 5 minutes after that.

Suddenly I'm not so afraid of a LiPo blowing up on me[;)]

the lipo would be ok... becouse that bat does not have enough current... becouse the cells were over heating and... explodeing... it was drawing too mutch current and heating up.

and jeez that would have sucked... lol i made a battery out of electrical tape too!![:D]

yeah i know. I meant because lipos are more fradgile

ya lipo's are a lot more lethial than thows are...if that happened with a lipo your whole car would be up in flames!

pede_187 -> RE: Do NOT use cheap cells with brushless (they just exploded/vented) (3/24/2008 6:38:58 PM)

now my car smells like a mix of chemicals and smoke...........but at least the body is ok and nothing is damaged other than the battery

Kemo -> RE: Do NOT use cheap cells with brushless (they just exploded/vented) (3/24/2008 7:34:18 PM)

what did you do to the battery to begin with? Thats not how tenergy packs come... you definitely did something wrong there.

Had the batteries been in SxS form and not whatever you did to the pack, it wouldn't have overheated, vented or exploded.

pede_187 -> RE: Do NOT use cheap cells with brushless (they just exploded/vented) (3/24/2008 7:49:02 PM)

no, tenergy packs are very cheaply made. I was asking for it putting them in brushless and it's a few months old

Kemo -> RE: Do NOT use cheap cells with brushless (they just exploded/vented) (3/24/2008 8:10:04 PM)

You clearly do not understand. YOU are what caused the pack to fail. You did not have the pack in Side by Side form, and you had it wrapped thick with electrical tape... how can it let heat out? What you did to your pack, is why it did what it did.

bluecaka69 -> RE: Do NOT use cheap cells with brushless (they just exploded/vented) (3/24/2008 8:33:48 PM)

thats my thoughts to much tape heat just built up and boom oh well live and learn

pede_187 -> RE: Do NOT use cheap cells with brushless (they just exploded/vented) (3/24/2008 8:35:10 PM)

It has never happened before and no I didn't put it into sxs

Kemo -> RE: Do NOT use cheap cells with brushless (they just exploded/vented) (3/24/2008 8:42:11 PM)

They are sport packs with spot welds... normally you don't ever want to use those in high current draining brushless systems.

Its best to buy tenergy cells unassembled and make your own packs. You also want deans connectors for sure. The cheap molex connectors can melt in a hurry, and when that happens, you hope that it doesn't create a short.

I've got a ton of tenergy packs i'm disassembling to turn into SxS packs for my vehicles. I initially bought them to become a dealer, but I'm going to end up using them as hump packs for 1/5 scale and also as midrange club packs for our local track in SxS form.

yes, I know, I was going to put them in sxs this weekend. let me just tell you that I know of many people that use tenergy for brushless.

I use deans. I've been looking at brushless for close to a year. I would never use tamiya connectors for brushless...........or any rc for that matter

Kemo -> RE: Do NOT use cheap cells with brushless (they just exploded/vented) (3/24/2008 8:51:55 PM)

your electrical tape is why it vented.

Heat shrink tubing is what you should have used instead.

NoobDrifter -> RE: Do NOT use cheap cells with brushless (they just exploded/vented) (3/25/2008 4:05:35 AM)

What does SxS mean? Is that where all six cells are sideways next to each other like [][][][][][]
Not like:
[][]
[][]
[][]
And are Tamiya connectors really that bad?

Rodney -> RE: Do NOT use cheap cells with brushless (they just exploded/vented) (3/25/2008 1:22:28 PM)

Pay attention to the current rating of the batteries and keep ventilation proper. You were the cause, not the battery.

I know. It went below the safe voltage............but good thing it was only a $20 battery instead of a $100 battery

vdubman -> RE: Do NOT use cheap cells with brushless (they just exploded/vented) (3/26/2008 12:01:22 AM)

they are better in s x s but t energys will still get very hot they just dont have enuf current. i was running tenergy4500 red and black s x s but they didnt last long because they was getting way to hot and they had no black tape or shrink wrap.

Rodney -> RE: Do NOT use cheap cells with brushless (they just exploded/vented) (3/26/2008 5:09:01 PM)

Check the C rating on the battery specs. You can not exceed that value without paying a penalty in lifetime. In fact, it is best to never even run at the C rating for more than a few seconds. Try to keep current drain below the maximum C rating by about 20%, i.e. don't run for extended periods above 80% of the C rating.

peskelton -> RE: Do NOT use cheap cells with brushless (they just exploded/vented) (4/14/2008 7:09:36 PM)

What is a good C rating to use in a 4x4 buggy with a Mamba speedo and 3600kV motor?

I too purchased the individual 4500mah red Tenergy batts off ebay. So far, I cannot get them to work well.

In my 4WD brushless setup, they don''t get hot at all. In my brushed mod 2WD they got really hot. In both cases the speed was very slow. I think the problem is my charger. I''m just getting back into racing after about 7 years so I''m charging with my Novak Millenium. In NiMH mode, it only charges at 1.5 amps. I know, I know...it''s not enough, right? But if it charges all the way, aren''t the cells still getting all the voltage they need?

Good thread! Thanks guys!

Paul
