after a round break-in and 2 lights, the next time I went to the field, I couldnt get it to even fire. The carb had fuel sitting in it so it should of had plenty. After many many flips, and not the slightest crackle or pop or exhaust smell, I pulled the plug, set it up against a muffler bolt and the engine and couldnt see any spark. I was spinning it as fast as possible. What are the chances of the ignition unit already being bad?

It's possible. However, the magneto ignition system makes a spark that is very difficult to see if you are hand-flipping. We have a special device that allows us to see the spark. It's a small box with an enclosed spark gap that lets us check. You can get one at almost any small engine shop.

The most common reason for non-starting is dirt in the carburetor screen. It blocks proper fuel flow and the engine won't run. If the carb is clean, and you can't get it to start when spun with an electric starter, then we'd consider the possibility of a bad ignition system.
