I am finding that my Sullivan fuel tank stoppers which are designed for gasoline are deteriorating after 2 weeks. At first I thought vibration and over tightening the stopper were my issues. Last night I put a new stopper in a cup of my fuel mixture and by the morning the rubber was MUCH softer and could be torn very easily. I am using premium Union 76 gasoline and Klotz synthetic oil. I have heard that some gasolines contain alcohol which will destroy a "gasoline rated" stopper. Has anyone else heard of this? Any other ideas?

Do a search on this. I remember something about a bad batch of stoppers that were mislabeled or something from the factory. What color are they?

Bob,

I tested a different gas (ARCO) with Klotz oil. After soaking for 2 days my rubber stopper is NOT deteriorating. Looks like additives in Unocal gas is my problem. I did a little research and discovered that gasoline composition is EXTREMELY complicated. In addition not only is each manufacturer's composition very different each manufacture's composition is different from "season-to-season". Because of the pressure of environmental regulations much of what is going into our gasoline can be problematic. The best alternative is to purchase 110 octane unleaded fuel (from a local supplier) in 5 gallon lots (higher performance and better lubrication). However "safety issues" and the "hassle factors" need to be considered. I have sent Sullivan an email asking for their help. I will post their response. My Sullivan stopper is black.
