Hello,

I'm new to electric pattern which is why I am asking this question. The first requirement that you have is that the batteries have to be secure so that they don't move around in flight. The second requirement is that the mounting method has to be flexible enough so that you can move the batteries to adjust your CG. So how do all of you experts out there solve these two, conflicting requirements?

Pictures would be very helpful,

Thanks in advance,

Terry

Velcro on the batteries and a velcro strap.

Scroll down for the mounting method.

Jim,

From what I have seen, that is the most common method (I have used that method for my receiver battery in my glow plane). How do you get the ability to move the battery to change your CG? Do you have several velcro straps next to each other and you move the battery that way or do you move the strap itself?

I have done a little research since I posted this question. One method I saw was a long tray running from the wing tube forward with slots along the sides. I think that this was how you could move the velcro straps (and batteries) or maybe it was just for securing the batteries front to back.

Another question, what is the best way to mount two 5s 18.5v packs? Tape them together as one and mount it that way or mount them separately?

Thanks for your time and advice,

Terry

Lots of ways I guess. I have velcro on the tray, beneath the batteries ( I have 2 4S 3700's, in series.) The batteries are held together with two smaller pieces of velcro that separates them, allowing some air flow between them. The batteries have velcro that attaches them to the velcro glued to the bottom of the battery tray. Then I have two velcro straps that wrap around them holding them down. Yeah, lots of velcro, but I haven't had problems yet. The velcro can wear over time, but I'm not sure what will die first, the velcro or the aircraft. The straps are not glued in any way to the aircraft so they can be easily replaced. The velcro on the batteries and the battery tray is what really holds them in place and the strap ensures they don't wiggle around or pull away from the battery velcro.

The velcro glued to the bottom of the tray is longer than the batteries, so I can move them forward or back two or three inches to tweak balance. The strap stays in place, but since it is not glued, it runs through some holes drilled in the plane's tray ( the strap goes around the batteries, under and around the bottom of the tray), I can move it if I want. The batteries are stacked on top of each other, I may change it to side by side, but haven't done this yet. The batteries are actually a little bit of a fiddle to remove since there's so much velcro, but I can work them out by wiggling forward/back, side to side when needed.

Put two self-adhesive rubber strips at one side of the battery, facing down to the underlay, then put two self-adhesive velcroue s strips ("female" and "male" together so you have "female" on one side and "male" at the other side. This velcroue should be long enough to make one good round around the battery including base. The rubber strips prevents the battery to float around, and it is easy to remove the battery, change CG etc, without struggeling and damaging the inside of the plane.

Although, my example is from a small plane, but I assume you'll catch the idea

I'll try to attach a few pictures.

Jim,

Thanks for the explanation. I like it, it's simple and straight forward and it works. The only installation that I have seen was one that had a wood frame built around the batteries, that was bolted to a wood plate that allowed some adjustment. To me,
that was a lot of engineering for such a simple task. That's why I posted this question.

Oh sure Terry, "dis" my wood frame! Seriously though, velcro as described is fine. I use two screws for reasons that you know but there's nothing wrong with velcro.

Take care,
